Greece sees first gay 'marriage'
The mayor of a Greek island has defied the threat of prosecution to carry out the country's first gay "marriages".
Two men and two women were "married" by Tassios Alfieris in the ceremonies on the eastern Aegean island of Tilos.
Mr Alfieris conducted the proceedings despite Greece's top prosecutor having issued a directive saying that same-sex weddings were outlawed.
One of the women involved, Evangelia Vlami, was bubbling with excitement as she told the BBC she was "so happy".
"From this day, discrimination against gays in Greece is on the decline. We did this to encourage other gay people to take a stand," she said after the ceremony held at sunrise on Tuesday.
Hostility
However, the weddings are bound to cause a huge backlash in Greece, says the BBC's Athens correspondent Malcolm Brabant.
Although homosexual practices were widely tolerated in ancient Greece, the modern nation is exceedingly hostile towards gays, he adds.
The conservative Greek Orthodox Church has expressed strong objections, and the country's Justice Minister, Sotiris Hatzigakis, said he believed gay marriages were illegal.
"If the Tilos mayor proceeds, he will have committed the criminal act of 'breach of duty'," Supreme Court prosecutor George Sanidas warned on Friday.
"We will go ahead despite the difficulties," retorted Mr Alfieris. "I still can't believe that someone would be prosecuted for defending human rights."
However, leaders of other municipalities who had previously considered officiating at gay weddings have backed down.
And while Ms Vlami was prepared to be identified, her partner was not.
Similarly, only one half of the male partnership, Dimitris Tsaibrounis, was happy to be named.
Gay campaigners believe they have found a loophole in Greek civil law, which does not clarify the gender of people wishing to marry.
But Greece has formally legalised neither gay marriage nor the "registered partnerships" becoming more common in other European countries.
The Netherlands offered full civil marriage rights to gay couples in 2001 and Belgium followed in 2003. Spain legalised gay marriage in 2005. The UK has legalised civil partnerships but not gay marriage.

Matrimonios homosexuales en Grecia por primera vez
Un alcalde socialista griego ha celebrado por primera vez los matrimonios de dos parejas homosexuales en Grecia aprovechando el vacío de la legislación, según han informado la agencia AFP y el jefe de la Unión griega de homosexuales. Anastassios Aliferis, el alcalde de la pequeña isla de Tilos, en el Mar Egeo ha unido a dos parejas, una de mujeres y otra de hombres.

Grecia, junto con Letonia, son los países de la Unión Europea que más se oponen al matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. Según datos del Eurobarómetro de 2006, el 84% de los habitantes de estos países lo rechazan.

Deux mariages homosexuels célébrés pour la première fois en Grèce
Un maire grec a célébré pour la première fois aujourd'hui, mardi 3 juin, les mariages de deux couples homosexuels sur la petite île de Tilos (mer Égée), en profitant d'une imprécision législative, a annoncé l'une des conjointes et responsable de l'Union grecque des homosexuels (Olke). Les deux couples, l'un de femmes, l'autre d'hommes, ont été unis très tôt dans la matinée par Anastassios Aliferis, maire socialiste du chef-lieu de l'île, a précisé Evangélia Vlami.

Encore très marginalisée et victime de discriminations en Grèce, la communauté homosexuelle avait annoncé vouloir mettre à profit le fait que la loi sur le mariage civil, adoptée en 1982, ne précise pas que cette union doit être nécessairement contractée entre deux personnes de sexes opposés. Après la publication des premiers bans, la procureur auprès de la Cour suprême était intervenu vendredi en jugeant que l'acte du maire pourrait être déclaré «nul et illégal». L'Olke a indiqué de son côté être prête à aller jusqu'à la Cour européenne des droits de l'Homme.

Athen - Die ersten Trauungen von homosexuellen Paaren in Griechenland sind perfekt: Trotz Widerstands seitens der orthodoxen Kirche und des Staatsanwaltes von Athen hat der Bürgermeister der kleinen Dodekanes-Insel Tilos, Anastasios Aliferis, am Dienstagmorgen zwei Männer und zwei Frauen standesamtlich getraut, berichtete das Fernsehen. Der Bürgermeister sah eine Gesetzeslücke, die ihm erlaube, diese Trauungen vorzunehmen.
Nach einem Gesetz von 1982 sei die Eheschließung "zwischen zwei Menschen" und nicht zwischen "Mann und Frau" möglich, hieß es. In Griechenland wird jetzt mit einem langen juristischen Tauziehen gerechnet. Die Trauung zweier Homosexueller sei illegal, hatte der oberste griechische Staatsanwalt, Giorgos Sanidas, erklärt.
"Die Trauung zwischen Homosexuellen ist in der vorhandenen Gesetzgebung nicht vorgesehen und daher nicht erlaubt", hatte er vergangenen Freitag erklärt. Die orthodoxe Kirche Griechenlands hatte wiederholt diese Ehen als eine "Bombe in den Fundamenten der Gesellschaft" bezeichnet. Die griechische Gemeinde der Homosexuellen (OLKE) kämpft seit Jahren um die Anerkennung von Eheschließungen zwischen Menschen gleichen Geschlechts.

Prefeito grego realiza dois casamentos gays
Desafiando a ordem da Procuradoria Geral da Grécia, e apesar das ameaças dos cristãos ortodoxos, o prefeito da ilha de Tilos, Tassos Aliferis, realizou nesta terça-feira (3) os dois primeiros casamentos gays do país, no escritório da prefeitura.

Aproveitando uma brecha na lei grega, que não especifica o gênero dos envolvidos em matrimônios, os dois casais, um gay e um lésbico, se uniram graças a iniciativa do prefeito Aliferis.

"Estamos muito felizes por termos encontrado alguém que realizasse nosso sonho", disse Evangelia Vlami, uma das recém-casadas e porta-voz da ONG 'Greece Gay and Lesbian Community' (OLKE). "Estou orgulhosa por ser a primeira lésbica grega a casar", completou.

Vlami afirmou que, por medo de a cerimônia ser interrompida, o casamento foi realizado logo pela manhã, bem cedo, e que os detalhes foram mantidos em segredo até o momento da assinatura dos documentos.

Um Ministro da Justiça, que não quis ser identificado, disse que os casamentos são ilegais e que todos os envolvidos serão processados, inclusive o prefeito.
