1-
I’m male, 34 years old, and was never married, but I feel like a widower. Why?
I loved a man; actually I still love him, but he is not around any more. It lasted for 6 years.
We met one summer in Ohrid. I was there with some friends… One night we went at a private party. He was there too. I was never before attracted by a man. I just started my first beer, so I thought, it could not be of too much alcohol. After a while we started a chat, we were talking about music, art, books, women, alcohol, sex… We left the party together, alone, to go on the beach and watch the night over the lake. And we set there on the send all night, laughed and drank beer. The romance could be clearly felt between us, so we decided to try to think of some poetic words about the night and the moon and the lake and the love… This sweet competition of words and feelings made us kiss without any doubt. This was the kiss and the moment which started one wonderful relationship.
I expected to feel strange at least at the beginning, but I didn’t. It seemed so natural and I was so soon so much in love with him. We continued seeing each other after the holidays, we used to talk for hours every day on the phone and he used to come to Skopje every weekend… It was like a dream. But noone actually knew about our relationship. We dreamt about living together and started doing all what was possible to achieve that. And we managed to arrange it after one year of the relationship.
He came to live in Skopje; we both worked and were ‘roommates’. As the time was passing by, our relationship was becoming just stronger and stronger. We never had a fight; we never had broken up, not even once. It was all going perfectly well. And in honor to our love, we built a tradition to go to Ohrid every summer and spend even one night on the same beach where we kissed for the first time.
But hiding this love was so hard, hard to impossible, so we decided to try to find ways to go out of the country and continue this life elsewhere. But this never came true…
…It was his mothers’ birthday… he wanted to go home and visit her… But it was Wednesday, I couldn’t take a day off work, so he went alone… and never came back – he had an accident on the road… he died there – in the middle of nowhere, just as the way he lived his life…
I live my life ever since as a widower, I live in deep sorrow, spend my nights in tears and regret, regret for all those things we could have done together, but we didn’t… and I wonder, I wonder if he really knew and was totally aware of how deep and how strong my love for him was…
So dears, if you really love somebody, love somebody even more then you love yourself, do not spend a moment without showing him/her how you feel, without finding ways to say over and over again how much you love… just go through life with your relationships as if there’s no tomorrow… ‘cause there will be a day when tomorrow will never come again…

I am writing you this while listening wonderful music on the radio and watching my girlfriend sleep and I want to share my happiness with you and support you not to give up, presenting you an example of a gay relationship that works.
This is our third year together. Finally the summer is over and we are back in Skopje for exams and ‘regularly’ living together as roommates. If only I could find the words to describe how much and in what way I love her! And, you know, the love in the gay relationships should be great, because otherwise it won’t be possible to fight the great pressure from outside. That is the biggest problem in the gay relationships. The straight couples have the support from the outside. They are free to love and feel love; free to share it with the others; free to express themselves; free to do anything and be supported by everyone around them. They hold hands in public and we are not allowed; they kiss in public and we can’t even think about that; they go to parties together and we are always ‘single’ there; they talk to everyone about their relationship and we always have to make up stories about our boyfriends that don’t exist; they go everywhere together and we go alone; they spend Christmas together and we are separated; they decide to live together, they are supported in everyway; we dream of living together, we can’t find enough reasons to satisfy everyone’s curiosity… We live fiction lives and have to fight every suspicion in the people around… We are pressured by our families and friends to live the lives they want us to live! It’s fine at the beginning while you can be ‘temporal roommates’, but after a year or two, when you are supposed to ‘move on with your lives’, get married or stuff like that, what excuse are you going to give?
And what do you think, you long it takes till we start believing in our own lies?!
Yes, love must be strong to go through all this…
And what about the pressure from the gay people… We must admit that gay people are great party breakers – relationship breakers! Terrified from the ‘tight selection’ they have, they desire and go for some forbidden fruit…
So, gay people have to hide from gay people as well as from the straight. You might find this odd, but it’s quite true and it’s hard! I am gay, I’ve been on both sides of the river and I know; it’s just irresistible!

National Gay Hotline Opens In China
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff (May 12, 2006)
(Beijing) China's first national hotline for gays and lesbians has opened with the help of a Hong Kong-based foundation.
It will provide free information and crisis intervention. Callers use an 800 number and speak to a volunteer in either Guangzhou or Shanghai
The Chi Heng Foundation says a national service is needed as more and more gay Chinese come out. Local gay phone lines have been swamped and can no longer meet the demand.
"On the mainland, being homosexual is still very hard," Hu Zhijun, a worker at the foundation, told the English language edition of the China Daily.
"Under pressure from families and society, most homosexual people dare not reveal their sexual orientation and have to get married to someone of the opposite sex."
The new service will be manned daily.
Hu said that the hotline has 13 volunteers all who are gay. They are all college educated with degrees in medicine, psychology, law or sociology and have undergone training to work on the crisis line.
"Most of the calls we have had so far are from people who complain of social stigma and ignorance, or from those who don't understand homosexual," Hu told the paper.
It is estimated there are 48 million gays in China.
Coming out is a difficult process in the closely knit family structure of the country and the government has been criticized for not doing more for gays.
It also has been criticized in the West for lagging in HIV/AIDS education The Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS, or UNAIDS, has warned that up to 10 million people in China could be infected by 2010 without more aggressive prevention measures.
Prison For Organizing Gay Parties In China
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff (May 19, 2006)
(Beijing) A man who used the internet to organize parties for gay men to meet for sex in highly closeted China has been sentenced to a year behind bars the official China News Service reported on Friday.
The man, identified only as Zou, was arrested in Beijing. His trial, before the Chongwen District People's Court, heard that he set up a Web site called "Beijing Sky" to promote "Hot Dream Party for Cool Beijing Boys".
The parties were held at his home and when they began attracting large numbers of men neighbors complained to police.
Police raided the house last November and arrested Zou and ten other men. The China News Service reports that he told police that he provided a venue for people unable to meet through other means and charged a membership fee.
"Ten suspected criminals, all males, were engaging in illegal sex activities, " the news agency quotes police as saying. "Zou's behavior constituted a crime of "Promoting Promiscuity".
In sentencing Zou the judge said: "Although people today are gradually becoming more free to follow their sexual preferences, that doesn't mean the law will indulge them. People should choose healthy and proper life styles."
Gay life in China is mainly underground. Last week a national hotline for gays and lesbians opened with the help of a Hong Kong-based foundation.
It is estimated there are 48 million gays in China.
The government has been criticized in the West for lagging in HIV/AIDS education The Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS, or UNAIDS, has warned that up to 10 million people in China could be infected by 2010 without more aggressive prevention measures.
A report issued in March by China's Ministry of Health showed that only about 30 percent of the country's college students have a full understanding of HIV/AIDS.

.
DOMINIQUE FERNANDEZ

Mass Arrests At Moscow Gay, Anti-Gay Marches
by Malcolm Thornberry, 365Gay.com European Bureau Chief - May 27, 2006
(Moscow) Moscow police moved quickly Saturday to end a gay pride march, and prevent a counter demonstration from organizing in the Russian capital.
Police said that 200 people were detained by police, including Nikolai Alekseyev, one of the organizers of the pride march. A police spokesperson said that about 120 of those arrested were members of the gay march, the others were part of a counter demonstration.
More than 1,000 police officers were put on full alert Saturday when Alekseyev and other organizers said they would ignore a court ruling upholding Mayor Yuri Luzhkov's decision not to issue a parade permit.
Alekseyev was arrested as he was preparing to lead a group to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside the Kremlin.
"The rest of us were forced out of Manezhnaya Square by lines of militia and police," said British gay rights leader Peter Tatchell who had gone to Moscow to joined march .
"Some individual protestors were surrounded, abused and attacked by gangs of fascists.
"Most of us re-assembled on the edge of Manezhnaya Square. Groups of roaming neo-Nazis stormed around the square looks for gays and lesbians to attack. We had to look inconspicuous to avoid being beaten.
"Then, some of the fascists threw tear gas canisters and formed a line with the police to block our exit from Manezhnaya Square. A group of about 15 of us assembled and left by a different exit."
Earlier in the day Alexeyev told the Interfax news agency that "the laying of flowers at the Tomb should serve as a response "to the fascist politics provoked by some injudicious remarks by public officials."
While police were arresting the gay marchers other officers were rounding up skinheads, members of a far right political group and supporters of the Russian Orthodox Church who were gathering not far away to form a counter protest.
As police moved in the counter protesters began chanting "Sodom Won't Pass Here!"
The gay pride march was to have been part of an international LGBT conference being held in Moscow. Gay rights leaders from throughout Europe were attending the conference. It is not known if any foreign nationals were arrested.
As a Green member of Germany's Bundestag, Volker Beck, was giving an interview before TV cameras, about 20 nationalist youths surrounded him and pummeled him, bloodying his nose. Volker Eichler, a gay activist from Berlin who witnessed the beating, told the Associated Press that police did not intervene.
Moscow is the only major world capital not to have a pride parade. In denying the parade permit Luzhkov said he was concerned about potential violence.
But on Russian Radio on Friday he cited moral reasons for the ban.
“I believe that such a parade is inadmissible in our country above all for moral considerations. People should not make public their deviations," he said
Conservatives and Russian Orthodox and Moslem leaders have led a pressure campaign against the march.
Russian Patriarch Alexy II has denounced the planned festival and parade, and the leader of Russia's Muslims has called for a "violent mass protest" if gay leaders go ahead with Pride celebrations.
Earlier this month police had to form a human chain to hold back more than 150 skinheads and Russian Orthodox Church supporters from rushing a gay event at a Moscow club.
The club was to have held a party and rally in support of the pride celebrations
Skinheads hurled tomatoes and plastic bottles at the gays while members of the Church held religious icons and prayed. One gay man was reportedly beaten unconscious.

ΝΕΟΣ, GAY ΚΑΙ ΡΩΣΟΣ

Young, gay and Russian
Sasha, a young gay man from Siberia, is happy about his sexuality among his family and friends but is wary of going public. He strongly supports Moscow Gay Pride. Here he talks in Moscow to the BBC News website about his life:
Only people close to me know about my orientation. I had no real difficulty coming out, apart from with my father.
At first, he was angry, of course, and reacted negatively, but of late he sort of ignores it and there is an understanding that nobody raises the subject in his presence although my parents and sister and I are great talkers. I have a couple of close friends who know about it.
It suits me that my family and friends know the truth so that I do not have to lie to them. Strangers - or polite strangers, anyway - do not as a rule ask about my private life.
I had some problems in school. There were jokes. But I never took offence and I found the experience useful because I developed a thick skin and I do not react when I hear unpleasant things being said for my benefit.
When I am in the street with my boyfriend, I cannot show tokens of affection. I cannot take him by the arm, for instance. Well, there are places we can go, but I don't like it, for instance, when ordinary, heterosexual couples demonstrate their relations. I have never risked holding hands in public and that is the only reason why I would not want to live in Russia.
Before I came to Moscow to study, I lived in a village with a population of 1,200 where the temperature fell to minus 50C in the winter and there was no internet back then. Even some of the TV channels could not be picked up. That had an effect on the people, of course.
I feel much more at ease in Moscow. There is greater development here, it is closer to Europe, there are less conservatives here, in my opinion. People take a more grown-up view here.
One day, I was out with my loved one on a square in central Moscow, we were hugging and two army officers came up to us. Well, we thought we would probably have to make a run for it, but they walked up perfectly normally. One of them even admitted he was writing a dissertation on homosexuality in the armed forces. That kind of thing could only happen in Moscow.
I have friends in other cities like Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk where there is also good access to the internet and information circulates more freely. There is tolerance there, but it's not the same as Moscow.
News vacuum
I don't personally know any cases of people being thrown out of their jobs in Moscow because of their sexuality and there are a lot of well-known gay people working here. On the contrary, I know a lot of gay people who are quite open about it and have not suffered because of it at work.
Despite the prohibitions in Soviet times, there were places in Moscow and other cities where gays could meet and mix. Of course, any mass arrests would not have got into the news anyway but from the people I know, I can say that there were no mass operations against gays in the 1970s and 1980s. I know people who lived together in their flats in Soviet times, at the end of the 1980s. Of course, it was an underground lifestyle.
I am absolutely in favour of the Pride. Many people have been wanting to hold this for a long time. Some gay people are not ready for it, but nobody I know has said the Pride is unnecessary.
I need this Pride to asset myself. This is my "pride", I'm "proud". This is one way of making ourselves known to society. The state controls the TV channels, which is how the people in the provinces get their information. When they were reporting about the success of Brokeback Mountain, nobody mentioned that it was a film about gay people.
I specially watched the reports on the TV news bulletins on the two main channels when they were handing out the Golden Globe Awards [in Los Angeles]. One presenter called it a "controversial film for adults".
So I believe this event, even if it does not make it on to the central TV channels, will reach the masses in some way and people will know that there are a lot of us and we are ready to defend our rights. I think the success of this Pride depends on the contribution of every gay person, even if it's just persuading somebody else in an internet chatroom to attend.

Gays Ask Moscow Authorities to Permit Pride Parade
MOSCOW, May 15, 2006 – Representatives of Russian gay and lesbian groups have filed the official request to stage a “Pride” parade in Moscow on Saturday May 27.
The application was filed with the Moscow city authorities who have said in the past that a gay Pride march would not be permitted. Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has been the most outspoken of the officials.
The authorities now have three days to respond under Russian law.
Also, organisers of the Moscow Pride sent a letter to the Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to protect the constitutional rights and freedoms of LGBT citizens from discrimination and homophobic violence.
Organizers claim that the Russian constitution, which guarantee the right of peaceful demonstration – as does the European Convention of Human Rights which Russia has signed, cannot be bypassed by Mayor Luzhkov.
And in Strasbourg, Terry Davis, the secretary general of the council of Europe, issued a statement condemning the recent violence in Moscow against gays and lesbians.
“I strongly condemn the recent violent incidents against gays and lesbians in Moscow, and I call on the authorities to investigate these attacks and prosecute the people responsible for them, and prevent any such violence in the future, Mr. Davis said in the statement.
“This is particularly important in view of the series of events currently being organised by the Russian gay and lesbian community to raise awareness about the difficult situation in which they live.
“They are entitled to call for full and unequivocal respect for their basic rights and freedoms, the secretary general said.
“The violent homophobic protests in recent weeks were neither isolated nor spontaneous. They have taken place against the background of a sustained campaign against the rights of gay and lesbian citizens.
“It is regrettable that several people who should normally be the first to speak out against such blatant injustice, have decided instead to endorse and actively support homophobic ideas,” concluded Mr. Davis
This statement was handed out at a press conference in Moscow held this afternoon by the Pride organisers at the Newsinfo press agency when plans for the “Gay Festival” were announced.
Answering questions about the gay pride, Nikolai Alekseev, one of the main organisers said it would be a tremendous event, not only for LGBT community but also for all Russian society.
“It brings society on a new level of tolerance towards sexual minorities,” he said. “This gay pride is most of all a march for tolerant attitude and respect for the rights of sexual minorities in Russia
Organisers also announced the results of their annual barometer to measure homophobia, a research based on a poll conducted by the Levada Center and GayRussia.ru and published for the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).
According to this poll the opinion of Russian citizens about LGBT rights has improved during the last year.
During the year, Russians whe were against discrimination of LGBT has increased to 45,3% – up from 42,8% last year.
This, the organisers say, proves that the plans for Moscow Gay Pride has not had an adverse effect on the opinion of Russians about gays and lesbians, which had been predicted by some sociologists.
Most interesting is that the number of those opposed to legal ban on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in one year significantly decreased from 36,1% in April 2005 to 29,2% in April 2006.
“Once again, this shows that since Pride was announced, Russians have started to understand what it is to be gay,” Alexeyev told reporters, adding much of this shif of opinion was due to media interest.
“Because the media has, for the first time, talked about us in a normal way – and because the media has discussed gays, people have a better idea of gays.
“They understood that we are not so different – and are ordinary citizen like everyone else.
“Of course, there is still much work to be done to educate,” he continued. “But we are heading in the right direction. Believe it or not, but for us, it is already a satisfying for all our work and commitment.”
The leader of the Russian lesbian movement, Evgenia Debryanskaya, has called gays and lesbians to take part in the Moscow Gay Pride.
“Those who do not go, risk to lose even the little freedom they have today in Russia,” she claimed.
Russian human rights activists and liberal politicians have also supported the Gay Pride in Moscow.
The executive director of human rights Moscow Helsinki Group, the main Russian Human Rights Group, Mrs. Nina Tagankina, said that this event would be very important for the LGBT rights.
She hoped that Russian human rights groups would co-operate with gays and lesbians much closer than before. In the past Human Rights Organization were not so supportive towards gays and lesbians.
Leader of the Russian Radical– a liberal political party, Nicola Khramov – said that he will bring at least 200 people from his party to the Pride no matter if they are gay or straight.
“Gay emancipation is a very important part of the Russian democratic movement which now faces attacks from far right extremists and clerical nationalists in Russia,” he told reporters.
“The fight of Russian gays and lesbians for their rights can be regarded as a fight for the democratic future of Russia” he said, adding that everyone will wear a pink triangle on May 27 for Pride – and reminded reporters about the King of Denmark who decided to wear a yellow star after the Nazis invaded his country and forced the Jews to wear the same.
A representative of a Russian Alternative Green Association also supported the Moscow Gay Pride which takes place on May 27 as the final event of Moscow International LGBT Festival.
At their international annual congress last week in Helsinki, the European Green, issued a statement of support to the Moscow pride.
Leading Russian and foreign media all attended the press conference. Such was the interest that journalists were queuing in the corridor.
Moscow City Hall today denied to make any comment to reporters about the Moscow Gay Pride. According to an official who spoke tonight under condition on anonymity “a meeting is planed in the higher instance of the city tomorrow morning (Tuesday)”
The request for the Gay Pride, officially called “a march for tolerant attitude and respect for the rights of sexual minorities in Russia”, created surprising reactions.
Alexander Chuev, a deputy of the Douma, who recently introduced a bill to ban promotion of homosexuality in the media commented to Radio Echo of Moscow: “Carrying out of the gay parade showing a gay way of life or homosexual orientation, is inadmissible.”
Chuev has expressed the willingness to take part to the conference of the IDAHO, organized within the festival.
Tonight, the Mayor of Moscow seems more and more isolated. Some sources are already say that he would give up and allow the event to avoid a ‘diplomatic incident’ as Russian takes over the Presidency of the Council of Europe.
Alekseev said that he was very pleased by the support of the Council, who, a month ago, wrote to the Mayor of Moscow.
“We have been working for six months with the Council and we have addressed several letters to raise the problems we are facing,” he said.

On 18 May 2006, the Mayor of Moscow refused permission for the first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride March.
ILGA-Europe condemns this decision of the Moscow Mayor and calls upon the Mayor to immediately reconsider his decision and urges the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to intervene and uphold the right to assembly for the Russian LGBT people.
Instances of denying or hindering LGBT people the right to assemble and demonstrate by the municipal authorities have occurred during the last couple of years in other European countries also. LGBT people in those countries have experienced violence, threats and appalling expressions of hate during the marches and demonstrations. These breaches of the basic human right to free assembly and homophobic attitudes have been condemned by the European Parliament’s Resolution on Homophobia in Europe earlier this year.
Patricia Prendiville, Executive Director of ILGA-Europe Executive Board, said:
“We are seriously concerned with the decision of the Moscow Mayor to deny LGBT people the right to assembly. We would like to remind Jury Luzhkov about Article 31 of the Russian Constitution which guarantees everyone a right to peaceful demonstration.
Russia is about to take over the presidency of the Council of Europe and such a decision contradicts the basic principle of freedom of assembly enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights. We also want to stress that such arguments against LGBT demonstration as religious objections and plans for counter-demonstrations cannot legitimise serious breaches of the right to assembly as confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights.
We also hope that the European organisations and institutions will express their outrage by such lawless actions of the Moscow Mayor. Meanwhile we hope the ban will be successfully challenged in the court."

Letter from Jack Lang to Vladimir Putin
Jack Lang

The Belgian Cancer Foundation has just published a new preventive information leaflet in French entitled Pour les femmes qui aiment les femmes (For Women Who Love Women), with the coordination of ILGA and in collaboration with the following organisations: Ex Aequo, Planning Familial, Tels Quels, Mega Top Biches, Magenta, and Vieux Rose.
Do women who love women have a greater risk of developing a cancer of the breast and of the uterus collar? It is because the problem is particularly unrecognized by the public most concerned that this initiative was undertaken.
Being lesbian or bisexual does not have a direct influence on the frequency of breast cancer and cancer of the uterus collar. However, there are certain risk factors that are unique to women who love women – which explains the importance of informing them of the risks.
To accept oneself as lesbian or bisexual implies taking care of one’s health.
What are the risk factors?
• Lesbians and bisexual women see their doctors less often (fear of homophobic reactions, less frequent use of contraceptive treatment) and have fewer early detection medical examinations (mammography or smear test• Because of social or family pressure, lesbians and bisexual women can sometimes feel depressed and, therefore, take less care of their health.• Studies show that lesbians and bisexual women are more reluctant to do a regular auto-examination of their breasts.• On average, lesbians less often have a baby before the age of 30, which increases the risk of breast cancer.• Certain studies indicate that lesbians and bisexual women may, at certain moments, abusively consume alcohol and tobacco, which increases the risk of breast and uterine collar cancer.
In addition to mentioning the risk factors in regard to breast and uterus collar cancers, the leaflet gives valuable advice for reducing them, emphasises the importance and the impact of early detection medical examinations, and explains the special framework of the doctor-lesbian/bisexual relationship.

Υπήρχαν αυστηροί νόμοι κάτά της "παιδεραστίας", αδίκημα που εντασσόταν στις "ύβρεις". Και η ποινή για το συγκεκριμένο ήταν συνήθως θάνατος. Οι νόμοι αυτοί αναφέρονται από τον Αισχίνη. Σωστοί κι αυστηρότατοι νόμοι! Συμφωνώ ότι με τέτοια αυστηρότητα πρέπει και σήμερα να προστατεύονται τα παιδιά - ιδίως στους χώρους που θεωρούνται ασφαλείς - όπως προστατεύεται το διδασκαλείο στον πρώτο νόμο - με την εξαίρεση βέβαια της θανατικής ποινής με την οποία διαφωνώ εξ αρχής. Ο δεύτερος νόμος στον οποίο αναφέρεται ο Αισχίνης είναι "περί προαγωγείας" (!!!) όταν δηλαδή ένας πατέρας εκμισθώνει το ίδιο του το παιδί για σεξουαλική εκμετάλευση (!!!). Κι Αισχίνης πάλι μας πληροφορεί ότι τέτοια περιστατικά - δυστυχώς - συνέβαιναν. Ο τρίτος νόμος είναι ο νόμος περί βιασμού (της ύβρεως) που τιμωρεί αυστηρότατα όποιον εξαναγκάζει σε σεξουαλική επαφή "παιδί, άνδρα ή γυναίκα, ελεύθερο ή δούλο" (Κατά Τιμάρχου 15) Ποιος θα διαφωνήσει μ' αυτούς τους νόμους;
Προφανώς οι Ελληνες είχαν νόμους ελέγχου των παραπάνω. Ομως αυτά δεν σχετίζονται ΜΕ ΚΑΝΕΝΑΝ ΤΡΟΠΟ με την ομοφυλοφιλία κατ' αποκλειστικότητα. Μήπως νομίζετε ότι δεν προστάτευαν τα νεαρά κορίτσια από τους επίδοξους βιαστές το ίδιο; Δεν κατηγορήθηκε ο Περικλής πολλές φορές επειδή είχε σχέση με μια εταίρα; Πώς είναι δυνατόν να ερμηνεύονται όλα αυτά σε σχέση με τους ομοφυλόφιλους αποκλειστικά;

Japanese transgender community emerges

TOKYO — To most Japanese, Takafumi Fujio — with cropped hair, thick arms and deep voice — is a typical, middle-aged salaryman. But until four years ago, when the food company worker started on a range of hormonal treatments, he was a woman, a housewife and mother of two.
Fujio is one of an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 Japanese who believe they were born the wrong sex, a sexual minority that has been largely hidden from view in Japan.
But that is quickly changing.
Japan’s first sex-change operation was performed in 1998, and its first transsexual and gay politicians were elected to public office in 2003. A groundbreaking legal reform allowing some transsexuals to change their officially registered sex took effect the following year.
The advances — the result of long years of work behind the scenes — have given Japan’s sexual minorities rising self-confidence and a greater willingness to come out of the closet despite the country’s long-prized conformity and disdain for displays of individuality.
“These changes have been way overdue,” Fujio said at a recent interview in Tokyo. “I think the law got people thinking, ‘If the country has recognized these people, they must be acceptable after all.’”
Greater visibility and legal change are part of a general trend in Japan toward more personal freedom.
Technology and tradition have also played a role. The Internet has spread information about alternative lifestyles to people who in previous generations would have been isolated. Meanwhile, Japan’s lack of deeply-rooted moral or religious censure of sexual minorities has made the transition easier.
The rising visibility is a sharp turnaround for those like Fujio, who grew up in an era in postwar Japan where talk of transsexual lifestyles was rare.
“The transsexual community had a great dilemma. If we spoke out, we risked our jobs, our livelihoods. But by staying silent, nothing would change,” said Aya Kamikawa, Japan’s first and only transsexual politician.
Since 2003, Kamikawa — a male to female transgender — has played a key role in lobbying for changes at both the national and local levels, including the sex-change law. She has also successfully lobbied to eliminate unnecessary mentions of gender in public documents.
Still, obstacles to full acceptance remain.
Under the 2004 law, for instance, only unmarried, childless applicants can change their official gender. Applicants also must have had a sex-change operation and been diagnosed by two doctors as having gender-identity disorder.
A mere 151 people in Japan officially changed their sex between July 2004, when the law went into force, and the end of March 2005, according to the Justice Ministry. Fujio himself isn’t eligible to change his official sex because he has children.
The stigma of transsexuality is also still high in Japan. Transsexuals say they are reluctant to seek work or even go to the dentist for fear their original gender will be revealed by documents such as health insurance cards.
Moreover, transsexuals experience even more restrictions because some of them are also gay or lesbian. Same-sex marriages are forbidden in Japan, hospital visits by gay partners can be blocked and it’s impossible for homosexual couples to jointly purchase a home or for a survivor to inherit the assets of a gay partner.
“We have no legal protection or assurances whatsoever, and that brings many worries,” said Aki Nomiya, who was born male but now lives as a woman with a female partner, though she has not had a full sex-change operation.
Japan first needs to allow for a partnership system like that of France, whose 1999 Civil Solidarity Pact gives some legal rights to unmarried couples, Nomiya says.
But officials say Japan isn’t yet ready for such changes.
“This is a very complicated and divisive problem that needs to be treated with caution” said Kunio Koide, councilor of the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Justice Ministry. “I don’t see widespread support for reforms at the moment.”
Still, Japan’s sexual minorities as whole have claimed some victories.
Kanako Otsuji, Japan’s first openly gay politician, successfully lobbied for a change in local regulations to allow non-married couples to apply for public housing — including gays and transsexuals.
“My generation has been the first to speak out about sexual minority rights in any meaningful way,” Otsuji, 31, said in Osaka prefecture, where she has held an assembly seat since 2003.
In the meantime, Japan’s transsexuals are enjoying their increasing freedom — while chafing against the enduring restrictions.
As a young woman, Fujio says he suppressed his desire to live as a man and married a male co-worker “mainly out of feelings of obligation,” giving birth to two girls.
Nine years later in 2002, Fujio made the decision to divorce and live as a man.
The move, however, has had painful consequences. His ex-husband’s family has allowed him to see his children only once since the divorce four years ago.
“Of course it’s tough. We have to first get the public to think, ‘It’s OK to live that way of life,’” he said. “Then, maybe I’ll get to see my kids — maybe in 10 years.”

Iran's sex-change operations
By Frances Harrison, The BBC's Tehran correspondent(2005)
In a country that has outlawed homosexuality, Frances Harrison meets one Iranian cleric who says the right to a sex change is a human right.
For 20 years Mahyar has been a woman trapped in a man's body.
As a small child Mahyar liked dressing up in women's clothes and experimenting with make-up but as she grew older it got more difficult. "I badly needed to do it but it had to be in secret," she says.
Now she wants to have a sex-change operation - if she can muster the £2,000 it will cost in Iran. If her family doesn't help financially, she says she might sell one of her kidneys to pay for it.
"People say you'll get other illnesses but I think I can live without one kidney. I cannot live between the sky and the earth," says Mahyar.
Locked-up
Surgeons have already removed Mahyar's testicles. After the operation, her older brother locked her up for a week and wouldn't let her use the telephone. Mahyar's brother says someone has put a spell on her.
When Mahyar wants to feel normal she goes to the clinic of Dr Mirjalali - Iran's leading sex-change surgeon. There are women who were men, men who were women and those like Mahyar waiting for the operation they believe will be a sort of rebirth.
Dr Mirjalali says in Europe a surgeon would do about 40 sex change operations in a decade. He's done 320 in the last 12 years in Iran.
"If you saw them out in the street you wouldn't realise that one day they were the opposite sex," he boasts.
The doctor will use parts of Mahyar's intestines to create female sex organs. He warns it involves five or six hours of difficult surgery and weeks of painful recuperation.
Mahyar loves to go to cosmetics shops - and try out new nail varnish for her long manicured nails and discuss with the amused female shop assistants the best sort of foundation cream to hide her stubbly chin.
The sight of a man wearing make-up does turn heads on the street. Islamic tradition does not allow cross dressing - a man should only dress in male clothes. But that is not to say Iran's religious scholars are antagonistic to transsexuals.
Hojatulislam Kariminia wrote his doctoral thesis on the implications of sex-change operations for Islamic law.
He is a leading expert on questions like does a husband or wife need the permission of their spouse before a sex change operation? Is their marriage automatically annulled afterwards and what happens to the wife's dowry money or inheritance if she becomes a man.
Ayatollah Khomeini
He shows me the book in Arabic in which, 41 years ago, Ayatollah Khomeini wrote about new medical issues like transsexuality.
"I believe he was the first Islamic scientist in the world of Islam who raised the issue of sex change," says Hojatulislam Kariminia.
The Ayatollah's ruling that sex-change operations were allowed has been reconfirmed by Iran's current spiritual leader.
That has meant that clerics like Hojatulislam Kariminia can study transsexuality - unlike homosexuality which is completely forbidden in Islam and illegal in Iran.
"I want to suggest that the right of transsexuals to change their gender is a human right," says the cleric, who is so fascinated by the subject that he says he dreams about the transsexuals he has studied at night.
"I am trying to introduce transsexuals to the people through my work and in fact remove the stigma or the insults that sometimes attach to these people," says Hojatulislam Kariminia.
That's not easy. In every way Alan looks like a man but he was born Alim - with a woman's body. Three years ago he had a sex-change operation.
"I don't remember who Alim was - what she used to do, what kind of personality she had," says Alan. The past is something he'd prefer to forget.
Alan was about to get married when the parents of his bride found out he had been born a woman. They were horrified and refused to allow their daughter to marry what they considered another woman.
Iranian society has yet to catch up with its religious leaders - who say transsexuality is an illness like any other for which Islam has the solution and science the cure.
Alan shows me his new birth certificate and passport, which has been legally changed to say he is now a man. He's surprised to learn in Britain a transsexual who's had a sex change operation cannot change his or her gender on their birth certificate. "I think in Iran it is better; in Iran they say you need to know your identity - either you have to be a boy or a girl," says Alan.

Gays take cautious steps to come out in Africa
Stephanie Nolen
GABORONE, BOTSWANA -- They slipped in the door one by one, their faces a mix of apprehension and excitement. Sensing safety, their shoulders relaxed a little; one man permitted himself an experimental giggle, a couple of women exchanged slow and sidelong glances.
It was the bimonthly meeting of Legabibo -- Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana -- and just attending this gathering, in a drab conference room on the edge of the city, was an act of courage. Homosexuality is illegal in Botswana, as it is in most other sub-Saharan African countries. And while no one could get arrested for attending a meeting (you'd have to be caught having sex for that), just showing up at Legabibo is enough to risk ostracism and family shame. The threat of physical violence is pervasive, too.
"People say things to us like, 'Are you crazy, do you think we have such people in Botswana?'" sighed Prisca Mogapi, 25, who heads the group. "They say, 'Being homosexual is something you adopt from people in European countries.' And I have to tell them that it has been in Botswana through history. That you have always had women forced into marriages, but they have had secret relationships. That it's nature and they have to accept these people."
When Ms. Mogapi and her partner invited friends to a party to celebrate their relationship a few months ago, a local newspaper reporter sneaked in with a camera, then published a lengthy exposé about how they danced, drank and ate cake. The word "disgusting" appeared in almost every paragraph. "I wasn't surprised someone could be so horrible," Ms. Mogapi said.
Legabibo, which counts 30 members brave enough to sign up by name, has been trying since 2004 to become a registered organization in Botswana; the government is having none of it. A recent court case -- the appeal of a man convicted of having sex with a male partner -- refused to even entertain the legality of the ban on same-sex relations, saying Botswana's society was "not ready" to discuss such issues.
So Legabibo is mounting a heightened public-awareness campaign, paying a local newspaper to run a weekly question-and-answer column (sample: are some people born gay just like some are born straight?) and sending thick-skinned members to appear on call-in radio shows.
"There comes a time when you know talking to people will not force them to change and you have to confront them -- so we have to make us as visible as possible," said Monica Tabengwa, 35, the group's founder. A human-rights lawyer, Ms. Tabengwa is hoping that the next people charged for having sex will let her fight their case to the high court. "We need to force the issue, that's what they did with women's rights."
Legabibo is isolated in Botswana, but has comrades-in-arms across the continent. Next door in South Africa, equality for people of all sexual orientations was enshrined in the postapartheid constitution, and these days every city has a Gay Pride parade. Last December the high court ruled that a ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, giving the government a year to rewrite the marriage law.
Yet even there, pervasive hostility to gay men and women endures in many quarters. In February, for example, Zoliswa Nkonyana, 19, was beaten to death by a mob with bricks and clubs near Cape Town because she went public about her lesbian identity.
In Nigeria, the government recently put forward a bill that would prohibit any public display of a "same-sex amorous relationship" and proposes five years in prison for anyone who "goes through the ceremony of marriage with a person of the same sex," "performs, witnesses, aids or abets the ceremony of same-sex marriage," or "is involved in the registration of gay clubs, societies and organizations." Only one gay group in Nigeria spoke out in public protest.
Like most other countries, there is a broad gulf in Botswana between what is acceptable in urban areas and in rural. Across Africa, the fight for gay rights clashes with devoutly religious societies, either Christian or Muslim.
In its initial attempts to register as a society, Legabibo was told that a gay group would potentially be guilty of "aiding and abetting an illegal act." Without registration, the group cannot apply for donor funding. Homophobic government representatives use the lack of official paperwork as a way to keep Legabibo members from participating in public events, Ms. Mogapi said.
Interestingly, it is HIV-AIDS -- almost entirely a heterosexual disease in Africa -- that has spurred some openness on traditionally taboo topics. The public health imperative has obliged governments to deal frankly with prostitution (illegal but widely practised) and the sexual activities of marginalized communities in order to stop the spread of the disease.
At their most recent meeting, Legabibo members decided to try a petition, asking people if they were in favour of changing the law against gay relationships, and to send members on a "study tour" of Cape Town, which has a thriving gay culture. Several members, most of them university and high-school students, also swapped phone numbers or had quiet conversations about what they tell their families.
"I've always been the only one," said one young woman who sought out the meeting after she read the newspaper column. "It's sort of weird to be in this room with these people -- I guess they're all gay, too. I didn't know we had this in Botswana."
Gays under siege
In February, newspapers in Cameroon went on an "outing" spree, publishing pages of names of prominent people they said were gay. Homosexuality is punishable by up to five years in prison in Cameroon, and men suspected of having gay sex are sometimes forced to endure an "anus inspection" by police, rights groups say. In March, the editor of one newspaper lost a defamation suit launched by a cabinet minister, after a judge said the paper failed to prove the man had gay sex.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe routinely denounces "vile" homosexuality as a Western cultural import, and his government blocked an attempt by a comparatively strong gay-rights lobby in the country to protect the rights of gays and lesbians in law.
In 2004, the Anglican church in Nigeria led African churches (representing more than half the Anglican faithful) in a split with the governing body after U.S. bishops approved the ordination of gay clergy.
Also that year, a radio show in Uganda was hit with a $1,200 fine (after first being threatened with being closed) when it interviewed three "self-professed homosexuals" about their lives. A cabinet minister said the show contravened "God's moral values."

On 17th May (the International Day against Homophobia) in most of the Amnesty International sections throughout Latin America, Amnesty International is going to be organizing protests in front of the Nicaraguan embassies. This is because Nicaragua is the only democratic Spanish-speaking country that criminalizes sodomy.
