GLAUCO MATTOSO: MANUAL DO PODÓLATRA AMADOR

Με μεγάλη χαρά λάβαμε από τον Glauco Mattoso, έναν από τους πιο προκλητικούς και συναρπαστικούς σύγχρονους βραζιλιάνους συγγραφείς, την πρόσφατη αναθεωρημένη επανέκδοση του θρυλικού βιβλίου του «Εγχειρίδιο του ερασιτέχνη ποδολάτρη».
Πρόκειται για την τολμηρή αφήγηση των περιπετειών, των διαβασμάτων και των αναμνήσεων ενός ποδολάγνου με έμφαση στις αγαπημένες θεματικές εμμονές του συγγραφέα: την ομοφυλοφιλία, τον φετιχισμό, τον συμβολικό σαδομαζοχισμό και διακειμενικές αναφορές στα κλασικά έργα της παραβατικής λογοτεχνίας του Δυτικού Κανόνα.
Ένα βιβλίο που θα θέλαμε να δούμε μεταφρασμένο και στη γλώσσα μας.
Αναδημοσιεύουμε ένα μικρό απόσπασμα:

Bem, houve sim, algo que ficou nítido na memória, apesar do cagaço: o cheiro das picas policiais. Fediam fartamente, e a recordação daquele fartum me confortou muitas noites, ainda que descontado o exagero de quem detalhou o pormenor olfativo.
Os cheiros me magnetizavam. Melhor, me mesmerizavam. Na biblioteca pesquisei a respeito e comecei a desenvolver pra consumo próprio uma teoria sobre o olfato no erotismo, cuja pedra de toque seriam os efeitos afrodisíacos do chulé. Mais tarde a teoria tomou corpo e fundei o clube hoje lendário.
Naquela ocasião apenas reforcei minhas convicções. Pouco depois tive oportunidade de fazer dos nove com o carinha do Cacete, que na verdade não era cadete, mas un simles réco. Morava numa pensão, pra onde o Krupa tinha se mudado. Uma noite, ao visitar o baterista, encontrei-o na companhia do tal Lysandro, que viera do interior do estado do Rio pra alistar no exército, na intenção de fazer carreira. Pra dizer a verdade, não fui com o cara do rapaz. Acho que fiquei meio traumatizado com o caso do camburão e queria distância de gente que mexe com arma. Além do mais, o cara era feioso, tinha nariz muito comprido e boca de quem comeu e não gostou. Mas o diabo é que se interessou por mim. Sabendo que o Krupa não discriminava, me paquerou abertamente. Veio com um papo de que seus amigos todos faziam michê, mas ele não queria transar por dinheiro, que só oria pra cama com alguém que estivesse a fim, e fez várias perguntas a meu respeito.
Respondi sem maior entusiasmo, mas ele insistia. A certa altura, quis saber o que mais me excitava. Deixei escapar a verdade:
- Olha, acho que é o cheiro. Quanto mais forte, mais me excita. Principalemete do pé.

Perversions on Parade examines activist Brazilian poet's work

Glauco Mattoso, an anti-establishment Brazilian poet whose career dates to the late 1960s, fascinates Professor Steven Butterman.

"Mattoso's poetry really subverts the conventions of heterosexuality," Butterman said. "It deals with themes of being different. He was very much ahead of his time."

Mattoso is still alive and he remains prolific, but in Butterman's new book, Perversions on Parade, a specific section of the poet's career is emphasized.

The focus is on Mattoso's influence in an era of repressive dictatorship in Brazil. Through the 1980s, despite strict governmental censorship, he contributed to the gay and lesbian rights movement within Brazil.

Butterman's work is the first book-length study of Mattoso to be written in English. He notes that Mattoso's work is valuable not only to the study of literature, but also to fields such as political science, civil rights and other cultural studies. Butterman particularly appreciates the breadth of Mattoso's work. He said also hopes to illuminate a poet whose career has been "under-studied and pushed away."

Mattoso confronted a staid society through his poetry, Butterman said, by isolating and discussing themes which were "so repugnant to any reader, but particularly to literary critics and scholars." He did not shy away from overtly sexual or even scatological themes, Butterman said, but instead confronted and questioned them.

"He was asking," Butterman said, "why are these images considered graphic when they're so human?"

According to Butterman, if Mattoso could de-stigmatize open discussion of natural bodily functions, then a manner of "true democracy" would follow in Brazil. It was by distilling humanity and discussing its basic operations that Mattoso argued for the fair treatment of gays and lesbians.

"No one's shit smells better than anyone else's," Butterman said, underlining Mattoso's assertion that humans are humans, no matter their sexual orientation.

Mattoso's poetry indeed abandoned cultural norms, but Butterman said that his use of shocking themes was instrumental in advancing the equal rights movement within Brazil. Butterman colorfully refers to Mattoso's style as "turd-world poetics."

Interestingly, Butterman points out, Glauco Mattoso was only his pen name. The poet today is blind due to the effects of glaucoma, and he took the name years ago in recognition of the disease-Glauco Mattoso is glaucomatous. This off-beat detail alone perfectly exemplifies Mattoso, who Butterman describes as "a great punster."

Aside from writing the book, Butterman has been working with University Librarian William Walker to bring to Otto G. Richter Library a rare collection of the underground alternative media that improbably thrived under Brazil's dictatorship.

The large collection, which features publications of both Mattoso and his contemporaries, documents an otherwise undocumented movement, according to Walker.

"This is not the mainstream, sanitized history [of Brazil]," Walker said, echoing Butterman's statement that "this is not your typical history book."

Having completed his study of Mattoso, Butterman will continue to analyze the Brazilian culture that emerged under military dictatorship, focusing now on film that was suppressed at the height of the country's censorship.

Há 20 anos, Glauco Mattoso chocava o público do lendário Madame Satã, em São Paulo, com o lançamento do Manual do Podólatra Amador, romance autobiográfico no qual revela seus segredos guardados e, sobretudo, seu amor por pés masculinos e algumas escatologias. O livro acaba de ser relançado pela editora All Books, revisto e ampliado. O texto continua surpreendente, apesar de não mais chocar como no passado. Depois de 25 anos de aids e dez de Paradas Gays no país, ninguém mais se assusta com as perversões SM.

De qualquer forma, é ideal para a nova geração saber que não é tão moderna assim. Lá em 1986, Glauco foi poeta, prosador, letrista e um dos principais nomes da contracultura paulista. Para os não tão jovens, ler o manual é uma forma de prestar homenagem. Afinal, mesmo vitimado pelo glaucoma que o cegou nos anos 90, o autor continua militando na defesa de seus desejos. Além disso, a erudição de Glauco impressiona, ao mesmo tempo em que a leitura permanece leve e divertida. Ideal para ser lido enquanto alguém massageia seus pés.
