Ο ΕΡΩΤΑΣ ΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΔΟΤΟ ΣΤΗ ΜΙΖΕΡΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΚΑΙΡΩΝ;

Το Call Μe by Your Name
Το Call Me by Your Name
Από μια ηλικία κι έπειτα δε, όπως έλεγε και ο Don Draper “it will shock you how much it never happened”.
Το Call Me by Your Name
Τελικά όμως, το Call Me by Your Name έχει ιδιαίτερη αξία και για έναν άλλο, πιο ακτιβιστικό λόγο: Καταθέτει στη σφαίρα του mainstream μία gay ιστορία αγάπης όχι ως σκανδαλώδες περιστατικό, ευτράπελη εκκεντρικότητα ή camp θέαμα.

ΑΝΘΥΠΟΒΙΣΚΟΝΤΙΣΜΟΣ;

Ανδρέας Παππάς (athensvoice.gr)

(writersgang.com)

AN EGYPTIAN MALE SEX WORKER REVEALS HIS STORY
Mohie, a homosexual sex worker talks morality, family values and shows a little bit of the world he used to belong to.
cairoscene.com, 2017
The morals of this world are baffling; people could stand idly by and witness genocides and the displacement of entire populations, but a woman wearing a short skirt can spark a riot in outrage over her 'morality'. Laughable, still, is the fact that all the world with its morals is obsessed with sex, we see it everywhere, from TV commercials, to sci-fi films and music.
The first structures built by settlers of most cities in history were homes for shelter, pubs or taverns for laughs and fun, and brothels for sex. A profession as old as humanity, prostitution has been the subject of many films and novels in Egypt and the world throughout history, and the archetype of the 'whore' is one we have encountered much too often. In spite of an image that has been eternally judged by civilisation and its moralisation of sex, the power and sway of the 'whore' is legendary. Which brings us to Mohie, a 35-year-old denizen of Cairo’s underground, a former sex worker who spent 5 years of his life catering to the 'needs' of a certain segment of Cairo’s homosexual male population.
Born and raised in Cairo, and blessed with sharp good looks, Mohie is instantly witty and street smart; talents that have kept him out of prison amid a wave of morality arrests during Morsi’s rule and similar waves of arrests in 2014 and 2015. He has now ceased his operations because of a variety of reasons, but mainly because he started to fear for his safety and consequently the safety of his wife and three children.
“I have worked all my life, I was 14 when I started going on handyman jobs with my older brother, so this was no different, it was a job with hours, a right way to do things and a specific skill set. In the beginning, you are excited, so many people want your body, there is a certain power in that. But later, you start to resent the job and the reasons why you have to do it, and when it won’t validate you any longer, it gets much more difficult to take,” recounts Mohie.
Mohie identifies as a gay man, a fact he realised after his first child was born, and he catered to other gay men who had the money and desire to pay for his time. His longest and (by his admission) most profound relationship was with another sex worker, a relationship Mohie had to end as he feared for his safety. He was a sex worker and by dating another sex worker, the chances of his getting arrested were higher. He decided to end his relationship and lay low for a while, at least until the arrests blew over.
For the most part, Mohie met his clients online, they would reach an agreement and set a meeting with a time and place. Each time he went out, he feared he may not return home that night, that he would be arrested and have to call his family to bail him out and explain to them where he was and why; a scandal. But there was no other option and he vowed he would be smart and careful each time, so he could avoid landing himself in jail. He would wait a distance away to survey each john, to make sure it wasn’t the police waiting to bust him, as is their M.O. when it comes to arresting gay men.
Though he had been educated, the prospects, even for an educated man in Egypt are few and far between if his class does not afford him the luxury of being able to keep his family safe, send his children to good schools, and on some days even food for himself and his family is a luxury. Before Mohie’s decision to become a sex worker, he had been in dire need of more funds for years. The factory where he worked as a manager paid him next to nothing, and he would have to stay on site and work all the overtime opportunities he could just to make ends meet, especially when he had his second child. There was no way of getting promoted and no hope for change on the horizon. He decided to take out a loan, and thought he could invest the money and make small payments each month.
“Taking out that loan was the worst thing that ever happened to me. The little money I was getting from work had to include my loan payments as well. I would get 3 hours of sleep every night for about 3 years. My health started to deteriorate and I started to despair.”
After the revolution, Mohie lost his job and he was pressed to move out of an unsafe neighbourhood amid a city that was going up in flames after Mubarak’s ousting. He needed money, so eventually he resorted to sex work when a friend of his suggested it.
“When you get married they tell you that you have to be responsible, that your wants and needs don’t matter, because the well-being of your wife and kids is more important. Sure that sounds easy in the beginning, but when it comes down to it, any money you make is spent before you make it, because in your house, under your protection are 4 people who have needs that must be met, it was the role I took on.” explains Mohie.
Though you might find it surprising, Mohie is not a naturally sexual person and explains that the secret to being good at sex is not caring about it too much, that without the hazy vision you can really analyse what satisfies your clients. It seems that his ability to sacrifice his needs for his family is just what made him a good sex worker. He explains that despite his distaste for the job and the fact that he identifies as a moral person, he found a great deal of security among the ranks of other sex workers and indeed a lot of Egypt’s homosexual population, of whose company he had been deprived of because of the discrete nature of his lifestyle. He was a gay man with no outlet for his sexuality, so being closer to other homosexuals, even if it was in a context he didn’t like helped keep him sane. He expresses that he would have liked to meet other homosexuals through “normal” means where the encounter started with a conversation over coffee or something like that, and not over the internet as you both quiver in fear.
“I regret not knowing that I was gay earlier on in my life. Maybe things would be different now. I would have not gotten married maybe. They don’t teach you that being gay is a thing, they explain that this is what men do. I am a man, I never questioned my gender or any of that. Although I was never interested in women, not really. Even when I did engage with girls, even my wife, it was always because they wanted me and that felt good," he explains. "I wanted to see myself in that way, the caregiver, the protector. I always thought, 'why am I not talking to girls like my friends?' My answer was always that I am polite and well-raised and that it was improper. I came to realise that my friends were polite and well-raised as well, and were taught that flirting with girls is improper, but they did it anyway. Why? Because they wanted to, I didn’t.”
There are many cases like Mohie, of men who discover later in their lives that they are gay, often they abandon their families to pursue a new lifestyle. Mohie couldn’t, he explains that it was his love for his children that made him stay and deny his sexuality, and indeed that same love is what made him become a sex worker, and risk his life night after night.
Mohie’s view on morality is much more sound than many people out there, many of whom come from good families, and educated backgrounds. He explains that in all his years as a sex worker, he never met any bad people who were sex workers, they were a little rough around the edges because they had to be, but once you get to know them, they were just people who were persecuted by society and could find no other way to make money or find work, like trans women who couldn’t afford their hormones and had to hide away from society’s eye to live the way they wanted.
“They were always scared and defensive. They would find a group of friends and feel safe, like, the people in their group would take on anyone, even the state, for them, and, even though they knew full well that if they were to get caught, they would go through hell. The feeling they had together is what many of them imagined families felt like, seeing as their families had cut most of them off and severed ties with them. If this is what bad looks like, then we should all be thankful,” he remarks.
Mohie explains that when you’re a sex worker, you deal with the most honest version of people, the clients have requests they can’t ask of anyone else, things they have to conceal, they don’t conceal it with a sex worker. "People are at their most vulnerable in that state, and you see that all they want is 'something' and their lives would be better, if only they could have it, even if it is something that everyone tells them is bad. Their health is not harmed, they are not hurting anyone, they just want to feel good in the way that they want to feel good. If people felt good more often, a lot of things would sort themselves out," he says.
After years of feeling worse and worse about being a sex worker, Mohie found a job that paid him adequately and he finally started to have more money to cover his expenses. He didn’t stop sex work right away, however, because he was still paying off his loan. Come 2014, Mohie’s friends and acquaintances started to drop like flies amid the morality arrests that broke out all over Egypt. Suddenly being careful wouldn’t cut it anymore and Mohie started to worry. At that point, he had paid off his loan and a huge weight was lifted, so now there wasn’t so much of a need to do sex work. He warned his lover at the time, but he wouldn’t take his warnings seriously, which left Mohie with one choice, and that is to break it off and get off the radar for a while. Although it was a significant part of his life, one he will likely never forget, Mohie is happy to leave it behind him, but he is proud of his ability to take care of his family and to do the dirty work when it was necessary, and if nothing else, that is an accomplishment.
“It was not a good job and it was not something I would’ve chosen for myself. But it was the only way I could survive, the only way my children could survive, and if people spent as much money and effort into helping those in need as they do in trying to put us in jail, maybe I wouldn’t have had to do this.”

Mass arrests for waving the rainbow flag. Humiliating anal examinations meant to "determine" homosexuality. Being detained naked for visiting a public bathhouse. This the reality for gay people living in Egypt right now. Alexander Molyneux-Berry explains exactly what's going in Egypt.
So what's going on with homosexuals in Egypt right now?
The incarceration of homosexuals is being used as a political tool in Egypt. The Egyptian government at the moment is actually a non-religious entity – a military regime that ousted a religion-based political party and put the president in prison. They get a lot of criticism for being secular and so for them, politically, it’s good to champion cases against homosexuality and attack [gayness] as moral indecency. It wins over the more conservative, traditional, religious people of Egypt. The secularists stay quiet because at the end of the day there’s bigger fish to fry.
The description for the benefit mentions a concert in Cairo last September with Lebanese band Mashrou' Leila, whose lead singer is gay, and some flag waving. What exactly happened?
Up until now, arrests for homosexuality have been of limited to people who’ve been caught in the act. This incident is different because the concert went down peacefully, [like any other concert]. But when people at the concert were waving the rainbow flag, many conservative Egyptians saw it is a very politicised expression of homosexuality. The social media backlash that followed was crazy. Two days afterward, people were saying a lot of bullshit like “This is not Egyptian,” and “They are spreading indecency.” And people were [later] arrested for waving a flag.
The Arab Spring brought a lot of changes to the Middle East. What has the Arab Spring meant for gay life in Egypt?
For me, gay life in Egypt peaked in 2012-13 during the reign of the Islamic presidents Mohamed Morsi and Adly Mansour because state services and most of the state were rebelling against the Muslim Brotherhood, meaning that everything was super relaxed regarding the gay community. I remember a gay street party in a Greek club in Cairo, one of the gayest parties ever. I mean… a gay street party in downtown Cairo and the police didn’t want to do anything about it? That would never happen today. It got much worse for queer people when the military took control. As a tool to show the conservatives that they aren't liberal, the government says it believes in family values and that homosexuality is a sin. Everything about it is a political tool if it served them to be liberal and accepting of homosexuality I’m sure they would champion it. Luckily, the scene manages to get by anyway, just like they always have, but by being more careful about what you do.
Why did you leave Egypt?
I left Egypt and came to Berlin because of an incident in a hammam where TV-host Mona al-Iraqi went to a bathhouse with a TV-crew. When they wouldn’t let her in, she called the police who raided the bathhouse, pulled the [primarily straight] naked men out onto the streets and arrested them all. The men were later released after pressure from the West, and as they weren’t gay, the action was pointless. But the public ended up shaming gay people instead of shaming al-Iraqi for a despicable act.
In November last year, a German man got arrested for using Grindr in Egypt. Has the recent crackdown meant anything for expats or tourists in Egypt?
By law in Egypt, you can be deported for being gay if you’re foreign. However, Egypt is not going to actively seek gay people to deport because it needs the tourists. From a tourist's perspective, you are completely fine – as long as you are not hitting on your customs officer. Regarding expats, I know quite a few LGBT German expats who live a normal life with an Egyptian boyfriend. That’s because of social status and standing. Even if you’re not necessarily rich as a white person you automatically get put at top of society. As I said, the campaign against homosexuals is very politicised. They [the government] will do something big and pointless, then release it to show the public, so they mainly target Egyptians.
What does the future look like for the gay community in Egypt?
It looks bleak. As long as there’s an identity crisis in Egypt about whether they are going west or east, it will continue because they won’t be able to take a stand. There are cities where things are more liberal, in the touristy cities like Sharm el-Sheikh people get away with more. Again, if you’re well off you are fine, I know same-sex couples who’s been living together for years. If you’re in your bubble, you’re fine. But the government will continue to take these stands against certain gay Egyptians.

CAIRO’S GAY COMMUNITY: A HISTORY OF POLITICAL OPPORTUNISM AND PUBLIC APATHY
Dale Von Kodean (cairoscene.com, 2017)
In the late 90s, life for gay men in Cairo was drastically different than how it is today; a number of bars, restaurants, and public spaces across the city were friendly towards men who preferred the company of other men. Cairo's gay community thrived, men from all over the city were safely interacting, meeting, dating, and expressing their sexuality in relative freedom. This was, in part, due to the government's preoccupation with a long and painful insurgency against a wave of terrorism that devastated the country through the 90s. "The scene was much more alive. We met on the streets, at bars and cafes. There was a gay-party scene so active that most parties had hundreds of attendees," says Youssef*, a 37-year-old Egyptian man who leads a prominent career in the beauty industry.
As extremists halted violence towards the end of the decade - as a result of a deal struck with the government in return for more freedoms and political participation, Mubarak's regime sought to reassert its role as a protector of traditional values by carrying out a public morality campaign. This was the main drive for the famous 2001 police raid on gay-friendly night club Queen Boat in Zamalek. The incident - widely referred to as Cairo 52, which caused an international human rights outcry, led to the arrest of 52 allegedly gay men on charges of "habitual debauchery" and "obscene behaviour", with most local media outlets partaking in the character assassination of the victims by publishing their full identification details and causing irreversible damage to their lives. "I was at the Queen Boat on the night of the raid. I have seen people jumping in the Nile, others getting dragged by the hair and thrown into police vans, it was a scarring scene. Me and my friends managed to leave unharmed because of a friend's connection in the Ministry of Interior."
After the horrifying incident, which was followed by a very public and lengthy trial, the once-flourishing gay scene virtually disappeared; bars and public places stopped allowing single men in, and the Egyptian police kept a close eye on any activity they deemed 'not normal'. The Cairene gay community was forced into hiding and panic, feelings that prevailed for a long time. Around mid-decade, the internet was becoming increasingly accessible, which was a total game changer. "Our friends in the police told us to maintain a very discrete behaviour after Cairo 52, as the government was monitoring everything. We couldn't call each other or meet anywhere. The only way we would get together would be to show up at each other's places unannounced, we were forcefully thrown back in the closet. Most people who could find a way out of the country left around that time," Youssef recounts.
At the time, word on the street was to get off it, and that's what everyone did. No one was  dancing in clubs or cruising in public places anymore. Instead, everyone hid behind on-screen nicknames and moved their dating lives into the safety and darkness of their own bedrooms. Thousands upon thousands of gay men were crippled with fear, but their will to live and desire for normal lives endured. "The internet changed everything. Aside from the fact that we could finally talk and meet others in relative safety, we also gained access to studies and facts about our sexuality, which enabled us, and the generation that followed, to be more at peace with ourselves and learn to stand up for our rights," says Mohamed*, 28-year-old corporate employee.
Towards the last quarter of Mubarak's 30 year iron fist rule, the government allowed minimal social and civil liberties in order to appease its critics in the west and appear democratic. The period saw a strong anti-Mubarak movement that sparked courage and hope in the hearts of the country's youth; gay and otherwise. The community began coming out of its shell again, taking over bars and clubs, but unlike the 90s, they were no longer confining themselves to certain bars or places, they dispersed across the city. "I call these the golden days, the city was full of expats and open-minded Egyptians who were out to have fun and meet others. I made most of my friends during that time. We were still cautious, but the horror stories we used to hear became a thing of the past," Mohamed says of the
By the end of the millennium's first decade, a younger, bolder, and more knowledgeable generation jumped in the driver's seat. This new generation hasn't lived through the trauma of Cairo 52, and was better equipped with technological savvy, exposure, and awareness to deal with the hardships which came with their innate desires. They didn't seek validation or feel ashamed of their sexuality. This fearless generation came out to their friends and families, led powerful careers, dressed as they saw fit, and would not be told how to live. The power of this new generation as a whole, coupled with the rising influence of social media, led to one of Egypt's most glorious moments; the overthrowing of Hosny Mubarak. After the revolution, an explosion of art and self-expression took Egypt by storm, with the country's homosexual population taking a leading position. "We were suddenly free; for a good year or two, we were safe from prosecution, as authorities got pretty occupied with politically stabilising the country again. We spoke up on social media, said what we really thought, and fear finally took a backseat to the myriad of hopeful emotions we were feeling at the time." Yehya*, an artist who was 18 at the time of the revolution, says with a subtle yet proud smile.
It wasn't long before the government started paying attention again, and in another attempt to fight off the Islamists as the guardians of traditional values, signs of another crackdown began surfacing after the 2013 ousting of unpopular Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. Police traps were set using gay dating apps, public places adopting a look-the-other-way attitude with their gay frequenters were either warned or shut down, and life for the community, once again, took a turn for the worse, except that things were different this time. "The gay community has always been targeted for primarily political reasons," says Yehya. "It's never about traditional values or religion. The government arrests a bunch of us when they want a strong distraction or seek to make a powerful statement."
In December 2014, Egyptian police forces stormed a local bathhouse in Downtown Cairo, and arrested everyone inside on charges of debauchery. The arrest was made after receiving a tip from TV host Mona Iraqi, who claimed the bathhouse was a den for "group perversion acts." Videos and pictures of the televised incident went insanely viral on Egyptian and international social media, sparking a fierce online campaign against the TV host. The furious campaign led to countless international condemnations, which eventually cost Iraqi a managerial position at Shnit, a Swiss-based international short film festival, and landed her on trial for defaming the menarrested at the bathhouse, who were all - in an unprecedented ruling - eventually released for lack of evidence, under tremendous social media pressure.
The social media campaign, which followed the incident, was a true testament to the power of digital activism, and signalled an attitude change on Egyptian society's part; 13 years earlier, Egyptians stood by, watched and even applauded the government for Cairo 52, this was no longer the case. "You would think such an incident could have easily scared us again, but it didn't. Instead we took to social media and expressed our anger and frustration, and to our pleasant surprise, we were joined by an army of Egyptians who were forever changed because of the revolution. We've come a long way," Yahya concludes.
Today, the community stands in a unified spirit, yet scattered and divided. Some are still primarily looking for a way out, others choose to live in safe social bubbles of like-minded individuals. While those with no such luxuries either take the risk of stepping out on the city's streets wearing their true colours, or silently remain locked away in their dark closets. Safety for the community, similarly to other prosecuted minorities in Egypt, remains subject to the political agendas of consecutive ruling regimes.

Ο Big Daddy.

newsone.gr
