Belize’s Chief Justice has ruled the country’s sodomy law is unconstitutional.
The law punished consensual gay sex with 10 years in jail.
Section 53, the section of Belize’s criminal code which criminalized sodomy, was introduced when the country was under British Empire rule.
The legal challenge was brought by Caleb Orozco, the brave head of the Central American nation’s main LGBT organization, UNIBAM. The organization started it’s legal challenge in 2010.
Their Twitter message posted after the court’s decision says: ‘We won on all counts. Speechless. Omg. Speechless.’
Belize has a population of around 380,000. But the impact of the decision may be even wider. Other Caribbean countries with the same law, also introduced by the British, are likely to face their own legal challenges.
Jamaica’s law has a similar history to Belize’s and so is highly likely to be challenged in the same way. Leading gay Jamaican activist and lawyer Maurice Tomlinson is among those who supported Orozco.
Despite the LGBTI activists sounding surprised in their tweet, the collapse of the gay sex law in Belize had been predicted for several years, although the case rumbled on far longer than expected.
GSN reported in 2013 that the government was preparing new legislation to put male anal or oral rape on a par with female rape for the first time, once consensual gay sex was legal.
That was vital to counter anti-gay churches who argued scrapping Section 53 would leave no protection for boys and men who are raped.
In a 100-minute judgment today, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin ruled that by criminalizing consenting intercourse between adults of the same sex, Section 53 contravenes the Constitution of Belize. He said the constitution granted rights to dignity and personal privacy, as well as equality and equal treatment of everyone under the law. (gaystarnews.com, 8/2016)

'Henry Gamble's Birthday Party'
A thoughtful if slightly strained coming-of-age drama
A 17-year-old boy comes to grips with his sexuality during an emotionally charged birthday party in this film written and directed by Stephen Cone.
Filmmaker Stephen Cone mixes religious and sexual themes to provocative effect in his coming-of-age story set during a single fateful day. Beginning with a scene in which two teenage boys wake up in bed together after a sleepover and proceed to discuss penis size and engage in a mutual masturbation session, Henry Gamble's Birthday Party is destined to raise a few eyebrows. The film was recently screened at the BAMcinemaFest.
Henry, celebrating his 17th birthday, is clearly struggling with his sexuality, under high stakes conditions since his father is an evangelical pastor at a suburban megachurch. Henry's not the only member of his family with personal issues: His mother is deeply unhappy in her marriage, and his sister returning home after her freshman year at college, is torn between her religious beliefs and the dizzying freedom of the secular world.
The guests at the birthday pool party include a wide assortment of characters including Henry's friends from both school and church as well as several adult members of his father's congregation. The presence of the frolicking youngsters adds a sexual frisson to the proceedings, not-so-subtly illustrated by the filmmaker when one of the adult men stares at the nubile, bikini-clad young women, followed by a close-up of his crotch.
Tensions inevitably rise to the surface during the long day, including one middle-aged female church member delivering an impassioned lecture on the evils of sex trafficking. There's also the disturbing presence of an emotionally fragile young man who apparently attempted suicide recently and who later performs a horrifying act of self-mutilation.
The young teens also engage in much spirited banter even as Henry becomes uncomfortable in his interactions with a male classmate who's clearly attracted to him.
The filmmaker, the son of a Southern Baptist pastor, explored similar themes in his critically acclaimed indie feature The Wise Kids.  (hollywoodreporter.com)

(gr.euronews.com, 21/8/2016)

(kathimerini.gr )

Seventeen-year-old Anne just fell in love with Sasha, the most popular girl at her LA public high school. But when Anne tells her best friend Clifton - who has always harbored a secret crush - he does his best to get in the way.

A man has been jailed for two and a half years after he used Grindr to blackmail men who were not out.
Liam Hull, 22, targeted many men who were married with children, demanding cash with the threat of exposing them.
One victim paid him over £1,000 while another was forced to confess to his wife of 20 years. A third had a stroke because of the worry and stress.
Hull, from Luton, Bedfordshire, admitted three counts of blackmail at Luton Crown Court yesterday.
It is believed he may have had many other victims who have not come forward over fears of being outed.
Luton Crown Court heard he swapped explicit pictures with his victims and use their phone numbers to track them down on social media.
He would use the information to threaten them.
After getting £1,000 from one victim he told him: ‘Thanks, just be careful who you speak to next time.’
Prosecutor Max Hardy said that one man had been married to a woman for five years but had been using Grindr to meet other men for sex.
Bedfordshire Police arrested Hull in May after some of his victims came forward.
Defending, Mr David Healey told the court Hull had been diagnosed in his youth with ADHD and dyslexia and had spent some time in his teens in care.
It emerged that Hull had been convicted of an offence in July 2015 of making a false representation after contacting a man he had met through the Grindr site and asking for £200 from him to meet, but then failed to turn up.
In 2014 he had accepted a police caution for pursuing a course of conduct which amounted to harrassment by threatening to put pictures on Facebook of a man who had been in contact with him regarding sexual matters. (metro.co.uk, 25-8-2016)

Cell breakthrough to bring two-dad babies
SCIENTISTS have shown for the first time that it is possible to make human egg and sperm cells using skin from two adults of the same sex.
The breakthrough raises the prospect of the first fully “manufactured” baby made in a laboratory dish from the skin cells of two adults of the same gender.
The researchers admitted that the development raised serious ethical issues, but said it would help people who had become infertile through disease and had also prompted interest from gay people.
The breakthrough, funded by the Wellcome Trust, was achieved at Cambridge University in a project with Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science.
The scientists used stem cell lines from embryos as well as from the skin of five different adults. Researchers have previously created live baby mice using engineered eggs and sperm, but until now have struggled to create a human version of these “primordial germ” or stem cells.
The stem cells can be turned into any tissue in the body. As well as producing sperm and eggs, they will ultimately provide a “repair kit” for any organ.
Ten different donor sources have been used so far and new germ-cell lines have been created from all of them. The team has compared the engineered germ cells with natural human stem cells taken from aborted human foetuses to check that the artificially created versions of the cells had identical characteristics.
Details of the technique, published in the journal Cell, show that a gene called SOX17, previously considered to be unimportant in mice, has turned out to be critical in the process of “reprogramming” human cells.
“We have succeeded in the first and most important step of this process, which is to show we can make these very early human stem cells in a dish,” said Azim Surani, professor of physiology and reproduction at Cambridge, who heads the project.
“We have also discovered that one of the things that happens in these germ cells is that epigenetic mutations, the cell mistakes that occur with age, are wiped out,” said Surani, who was involved in research that led to the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s first test-tube baby, in 1978.
“That means the cell is regenerated and reset, so while the rest of the cells in the body have aged and contain genetic mistakes, these ones don’t. We can’t say no mutations are passed on, but mostly it doesn’t happen.”
Jacob Hanna, the specialist leading the project’s Israeli arm, said it may be possible to use the technique to create a baby in just two years. “It has already caused interest from gay groups because of the possibility of making egg and sperm cells from parents of the same sex,” he said.
“I am not in favour of creating engineered humans and the social and ethical implications . . . need to be thought through, but I am very confident it will work and will be very relevant to anyone who has lost their fertility through disease.”
The use of manufactured sperm and egg cells would require a change in the law.
The Nobel prize winner Professor Sir Martin Evans, who was the first to produce embryonic stem cells from mice, said the research gave “a new explanation of one [element] of human biology . . . but until it is applied for a practical purpose it is only a small incremental step”.
Robin Lovell-Badge, head of stem-cell biology and developmental genetics at the National Institute for Medical Research, said Surani’s team was the first to produce a reliable way of making human stem cells.
“It will be useful for the development of sperm and eggs, not just as germ cells but as mature cells. It will be important for understanding the causes of infertility and for the treatment of it,” he said.
“It is probably a long way off, but it would be a way for people who have had treatment for conditions such as childhood leukaemia, which has left them infertile, to have children of their own.”
Allan Pacey, an infertility expert and professor of andrology at Sheffield University, said he was “excited” by the idea of using skin cells to make sperm for the thousands of men who have survived childhood cancer and been left infertile. Others anticipate demand from elderly would-be parents and say the development will bring ever closer the prospect of people “designing”’ their offspring.
This issue has been at the centre of objections to mitochondrial transfer, the “three-parent baby” technology expected to be approved by the House of Lords this week.
David King, director of the Human Genetics Alert watchdog, said he was “concerned that scientists might view [germ-cell line creation] as a convenient route to creating genetically engineered babies”.(thetimes.co.uk)

Among the 14 British Overseas Territories, one – the Pitcairn Islands – has legalised same-sex marriage.
Another overseas territory, Gibraltar, has civil unions and is considering the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
But now same-sex couples will be able to marry officially in the British Antarctic Territory too.

(tribune.gr, 21/8/2016)

Puerto Rico is probably the most gay-friendly island in the Caribbean. San Juan has a well-developed gay scene, especially in the Condado district, for Puerto Ricans and visitors. Other cities, such as Mayagüez and Ponce, have gay clubs and gay-friendly accommodations as well. Vieques and Culebra have become popular destinations for an international mix of gay and lesbian expatriates and travelers.
In the cities and in major resort areas, it is easier for gay men and women to live their lives with a certain amount of openness. As you travel into the middle of the island, it is more difficult to be out, as people are not used to seeing same-sex couples holding hands or displaying affection publicly.
Recently, Puerto Rico's legislature has debated extending various rights, such as adoption, to single-sex couples. (lonelyplanet.com)
