Scientists have revealed why gay men are obsessed with beards

When you look around in gay bars and clubs, it appears
that almost every guy over 24 has a beard.
But is there a scientific reason why gay guys are
attracted to the scruff?
In a survey of 1,577 men and women from Brazil and the
Czech Republic, gay men had stronger preferences for men with more facial hair.
‘Homosexual men preferred hairier stimuli than heterosexual
women, supporting past findings that homosexual men have strong preferences for
masculine traits,’ the study said.
Published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior,
it found gay men often preferred their partners to have ‘thicker facial hair’
than their real partners had.
The authors noted while many people do not end up with
their ‘ideal’ beard, they are happy to compromise.
Similar findings also found in a study that showed
women pictures of men with varying degrees of facial hair, their sex appeal
changed.
It found men with clean shaven and those with unkempt
full beard were the less sexually attractive, while the sexiest men were those
sporting heavy stubble, followed by short stubble.
When it came to choosing a long-term partner, the more
facial hair the better.
But if you’re all patchy or can’t grow more than a few
whiskers, have no fear.
The first study also found gay men were most sexually
attracted to men with identical facial hair to their own.
And also, these findings also showed these results may
change in the future.
‘When beardedness becomes too common, it is less
attractive than when it is rare,’ Dr Barnaby Dixson at the University of
Queensland wrote.
‘This may explain why fashions and trends in
beardedness fluctuate over time.’
