LGBT rights in Slovenia
The lesbian and gay movement has been active in Slovenia since 1984, when MAGNUS, the gay section at ŠKUC (Students Cultural Centre, Ljubljana), was founded as the "Cultural Organisation for Socialisation of Homosexuality." A pro-lesbian femnininst group, Lilit, was started in 1985, followed in 1987 by LL, a lesbian group within ŠKUC. In 1990 Magnus and LL founded the national lesbian and gay campaigning organisation, Roza Klub.
Laws against homosexuals
Under the Penal Code of 30 June 1959 male homosexual acts were illegal in all of (now former) Yugoslavia. During the first half of the 1970s the power over penal legislation was devolved from the Federal Republic to the eight states and provinces. A new penal code that decriminalised homosexual sex was passed in 1976 and came into force in 1977. All discriminatory provisions were removed. There were no references to lesbian relationships in the old legislation.
Homosexuals are not prevented from serving in the army. "In some cases when individuals stated they're gay and that they don't want to serve they have been either excused or were suggested civil service."[
Protection based on sexual orientation in law
Since 1998 discrimination of LGBT people in workplaces has been banned. The same goes for employment seeker. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is also banned in a variety of other fields, including education, housing and the provision of goods and services, with Slovenia having among the EU's most wide-ranging anti-discrimination laws
Recognition of same-sex couples
A registered partnership law was adopted on 22 June 2005. The law covers only property relations, the right/obligation to support a socially weaker partner, and inheritance rights to a degree. It does not grant any rights in the area of social security (social and health insurance, pension rights) and it does not confer the status of a next-of-kin to the partners. The adoption of this law sparked a political debate in the National Assembly, with Slovenian National Party deputies opposing recognition of same-sex partners. The opposition Social Democrats and Liberals, arguing that the law proposed was too weak, refused to take part in the voting, leaving the chamber. The vote succeeded with 44 votes for and 3 against.
A more comprehensive Registered Partnership Bill passed the first reading in Parliament in July 2004 but was rejected by Parliament during the second reading in March 2005. The bill would have provided for all rights inherent to marriage apart from joint adoption rights.
On 31 March 2005, the government proposed a new partnership bill, described above, providing access to pensions and property. It was passed in July 2005, and became effective on July 23, 2006.
Gay life and Acceptance
A Eurobarometer survey published on December 2006 showed that 31% of Slovenians surveyed support same-sex marriage and 17% recognise same-sex couple's right to adopt (EU-wide average 44% and 33%).
In Slovenia there are many clubs and bars that are gay friendly. Few years ago there were only few but the number increases every year. At klub K4 in Ljubljana thera are gay and lesbian parties (K4 ROZA) every Sunday and one Saturday a month. At club Factory and Bolivar there are gay and lesbian parties organized by a group called Jing Jang. Parties take place there usually once a month. Other gay friendly bars and clubs in Ljubljana are Lan, Tiffany and Galerija. There are gay bars also in other cities.
Homosexuality is quite accepted in Slovenia also thanks to some, who were prepared to show and speak to the nation over TV.

.
A Vietnam War veteran, Matlovich appeared on the cover of TIME magazine in 1975 with the headline “I Am a Homosexual: The Gay Drive for Acceptance” - a full eighteen years before the ‘one step forward, two steps back’ enactment of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” brought the struggle of gay and lesbian military personnel into the public eye.
The TIME story followed the sergeant’s legal struggle to continue serving in the military after coming out to his commanding officers, including his lawsuit against the secretary of the Air Force.
Although Matlovich was not allowed to service his country in the armed forces again, his lawsuit paved the way for a vital change in military policy in 1981 that allowed gay troops to be discharged honorably instead of dishonorably. He was also the first nationally visible gay service member.
He died from AIDS in 1988. (glaadblog.org)

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (9/10/1547 - 23/4/1616)
Daniel Eisenberg
Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de (1547-1616), Spanish novelist. Cervantes, of Jewish ancestry, is one of the last major representatives of the Spanish humanism that was extinguished by the Counter-Reformation.That Cervantes might have had homosexual desires and experiences was first suggested in print in 1982 and restated more explicitly in 1987. There is much to support this suggestion: his teacher Juan López de Hoyos, to whom he remained close until his death in 1583, called him «my dear beloved disciple»; fleeing Spain under circumstances which remain obscure, Cervantes subsequently spent a year in Naples (Spain), of which he always conserved fond memories and wished to return. He spent five years a captive in Algiers, where he was on surprisingly good terms with a homosexual convert to Islam; he refers several times in his writings to the pederasty that flourished in the Ottoman empire; on his return from Algiers he was accused of unspecified filthy acts. Cervantes had an illegitimate daughter, but his childless marriage was unhappy, and he and his wife lived separately for long periods. Like Manuel Azaña, he put a very high value on freedom.
While Cervantes presented the male-female relationship as the theoretical ideal and goal for most people, the use of pairs of male friends is characteristic of his fiction, and questions of gender are often close to the surface. In his masterpiece Don Quixote (1605-15), which includes cross-dressing by both sexes, the middle-aged protagonist has never had, and has no interest in, sexual intercourse with a woman. A boy servant who appears fleetingly at the outset is replaced by the unhappily-married companion Sancho Panza. The two men come to love each other, although the love is not sexual. Part I of the book was dedicated to the Duke of Béjar, to whom Cristóbal de Mesa dedicated his Patrón de España and Góngora the only completed section of the Solitudes.

MICHELANGELO. DRAWINGS AND ATTRIBUTIONS

Michelangelo. Drawings and Attributions
From 6 March to 7 June 2009, the Städel Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings of Frankfurt will be presenting an exhibition dedicated to the issue of the attribution of Old Master drawings in the particularly contentious case of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564). Besides his world-famous sculptures, frescoes, and buildings, Michelangelo made a large number of drawings, which compelled great admiration in his day. As he never signed his drawings and burnt a lot of them shortly before his death, it is difficult to determine whether many of the surviving sheets are actually autograph or copies or imitations by other artists.
The occasion for the exhibition has been supplied by a drawing in the
Städel Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings whose attribution to Michelangelo was the subject of controversy in the past. Recently, the sheet has again been attributed to Michelangelo by several experts. Presenting a number of selected examples – amongst them precious loans from the collections of the British Museum in London, the Royal Collection in Windsor, and the Casa Buonarroti in Florence – the exhibition grants various possibilities for direct visual comparison, providing visitors with an opportunity for exploring the issue on their own in front of the original works.
The sheet from the Städel Museum’s holdings, "Grotesque Heads and Further Studies,” was purchased as a work by Michelangelo in the nineteenth century and attributed or partly attributed to the artist since then, before being deattributed around 1980. Since many experts have lately expressed their opinion that the drawing is an autograph work by Michelangelo after all, the plan for an exhibition evolved that would not be limited to dealing with the work in question but rather explore the problem of attribution in a more general way. It should be remembered that the Städel’s "Grotesque Heads” sheet is no "new discovery,” but an example of reattributing a drawing that has been known for a long time.
The Städel Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings boasts an outstanding collection of Italian Renaissance drawings, which is one of the best in Germany. This collection was mainly built up by the outstanding expert Johann David Passavant (1787–1861), who, as inspector of the gallery, added many valuable acquisitions to the Städel collection from 1840 until his death. The Nazarene painter was a specialist when it came to Raphael, whose drawings number among the Städel collection’s first-class works today. However, Passavant had a less lucky touch when purchasing works by Michelangelo; he only made a few acquisitions which were not free of doubt, which is why the "Grotesque Heads” sheet has aroused comparatively little attention.
The catalogue contains a summary of the history of research into Michelangelo’s drawings and explains which arguments and clues may be useful for the attribution of drawings besides style and quality. These leads include the exact identification of techniques, the sheets’ provenance, watermarks, the subjects dealt with, inscriptions, etc. The catalogue unfolds the arguments for and against the autograph character of the exhibited works as comprehensively as possible.

The Armenian town of Melitene was soaked in Christian blood, as was all the land of Armenia. The first blood shed for Christ in that town was that of St Polyeuctus, spilled in about the year 259, during the reign of Valerian. There were in the town two officers: Nearchus and Polyeuctus, the former baptised and the latter unbaptised. When a decree went out from the Emperor that all Christians were to be killed, Nearchus prepared himself for death, though with great sorrow at not having brought Polyeuctus to the true Faith. When Polyeuctus became aware of Nearchus' sorrow, he promised to become a believer. On the following day, he related to Nearchus a dream that he had: the Lord Himself had appeared to him in light, stripped his old clothing from him, clothed him in new and shining raiment and set him upon the saddle of a winged horse. After relating this dream, Polyeuctus went off to the town, tore up the royal decree on the persecution of Christians and smashed many statues of idols. He was tortured and condemned to death. On the way to the place of execution, he caught sight of Nearchus in the crowd and called joyfully to him: 'Save your soul, my dear riend! Remember the vow of love confirmed between us!' And St Nearchus later ended a martyr for Christ in the fire. His feast is on April 22nd.

Polyeucte is a drama in five acts by French writer Pierre Corneille. It was finished in December 1642 and debuted in October 1643. It is based on the life of the martyr Saint Polyeuctus (Polyeucte).
In 1878 it was adapted into an opera by Charles Gounod, with the assistance of the librettist Jules Barbier. Other works based on the play include a ballet by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1679), the opera Poliuto (1838) by Donizetti (adapted with Scribe as Les martyrs), an overture by Paul Dukas (1891) and a composition by Edgar Tinel.
The drama is set in Armenia during a time when Christians were persecuted there under the Roman Empire. Polyeucte, an Armenian nobleman, converts to Christianity to the great despair of his wife, Pauline, and of his father-in-law, Felix. Despite them, Polyeucte becomes a martyr, causing Pauline and Felix to finally convert as well.
There is also a romantic subplot: the Roman Severus is in love with Pauline and hopes she will be his after the conversion of Polyeucte. However, she chooses to stay at the side of her husband. Before dying, Polyeucte entrusts Severus with Pauline. (en.wikipedia.org)
.
This tragedy departs radically from the dramatist's named sources, more so than in any other of his works. It is argued here that the plot is altered in order to avoid any potentially subversive readings. There is an obvious political agenda—the monarch is not criticized at any point—but an overlooked factor may be a desire to neutralize the suggestion of homoeroticism. Thus, the play represents an apologia for Christian marriage and intimate relations between the sexes. This manipulation amounts to the portrayal of a heterosexualized hero, far removed from a virgin-martyr stereotype, and from the saint's legend as presented in standard narratives. (Scott P: Manipulating Martyrdom. Corneille's (Hetero)sexualization of Polyeucte, The Modern Language Review, Volume 99)
.
Felix. Leave me, leave me here alone! -
Say more - my goaded heart will turn to stone;
Vex me no more - I will not be denied!
Go, save thy madman from his suicide! [Exit Pauline.
How met Nearchus death?
Albin. The fiend abhorred
He hailed, - embraced: `For Christ!` his latest word;
No sigh, no tear, - he passed without amaze
Adown the narrow vale with upward gaze.
Felix. And he - his friend?
Albin. Is, as I said, unmoved
He looks on death but as a friend beloved,
He clasped the scaffold as a guide most sure,
And, in his prison, he can still endure.
Felix. Oh, wretched that I am!
Albin. All pity thee. (Act III)

- Θα ‘πρεπε να ντρέπεσαι ν’ αφήσεις τον Νίκο Πασχαλιάτικα μόνο του. Είναι καλά;
- Μόνοι μας θα ‘μαστε ή θα ‘ρθουν κι άλλοι;
- Ξύπνα ρε. Τι χάλια είναι αυτά;
- Και του Αντρέα;

E-0910/09
ΓΡΑΠΤΗ ΕΡΩΤΗΣΗ υποβολή: Raül Romeva i Rueda (Verts/ALE) , Michael Cashman (PSE) και Sophia in 't Veld (ALDE) προς την Επιτροπή
Θεωρεί η Επιτροπή ότι τόσο μεγάλες διαφορές στους κανόνες εντός της ΕΕ είναι απόλυτα δικαιολογημένες; Πιστεύει η Επιτροπή ότι υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος τα κράτη μέλη που εφαρμόζουν πολύ αυστηρούς κανόνες πρόσβασης (όπως το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και η Γαλλία) στην πραγματικότητα να στερούν από τους ομοφυλόφιλους την ισότιμη και δίκαιη πρόσβαση στην αιμοδοσία;
Θα είχε η Επιτροπή την καλοσύνη να ενημερώσει τους συντάκτες της παρούσης για τα αποτελέσματα, τόσο των διαβουλεύσεων με τα κράτη μέλη όσο και της συνεδρίασης με τις αρμόδιες αρχές;

The Blood Directive sets minimum standards of quality and safety for blood and blood components. According to article 152.4 of the EC Treaty and article 4 of Directive 2002/98/EC1, a Member State shall not be prevented from maintaining or introducing in its territory more stringent protective measures which comply with the provisions of the EC Treaty, for instance based on national specific epidemiological circumstances.
Furthermore, the Commission would like to remind the Honourable Members that the Blood Directive primarily aims at avoiding any risk of transmission of infectious diseases to a recipient of blood and blood components. In this perspective, the Commission would like to refer to the Council of Europe's Resolution CM/Res(2008)5 on donor responsibility and on limitation to donation of blood and blood components2, in particular its point 4.1 recommending to "ensure that blood establishments are ultimately responsible for the quality and safety of the blood and blood components collected; in particular, blood establishments should be responsible for the final acceptance or deferral of donors on the grounds of a risk assessment based on regularly updated epidemiological data, and bearing in mind the right of blood recipients to the protection of their health, and the resulting obligation to minimise the risk of transmission of infectious diseases. These rights and obligations override any other considerations, including individuals’ willingness to donate blood."
As indicated to the Honourable Members in its reply to question E-5739/063, the Commission has addressed this topic with the Competent Authorities of the Member States on 18 October 2007.
First, the following question was included in a questionnaire sent to the Member States prior to the meeting of Competent Authorities in October 2007: "Are there national guidelines for the assessment of at risk sexual behaviours ("Persons whose sexual behaviour puts them at high risk of acquiring severe infectious diseases that can be transmitted by blood")". The complete answers provided by the Member States can be found in the summary table of the questionnaire available on the website4 of the Health and Consumers Directorate General. The same question was asked again in advance of the last meeting of Competent Authorities for blood in January 2009. The answers provided by the member States are being compiled, and will be made publicly available soon.
Answers to the 2007 questionnaire served as a basis for a discussion point during the meeting of competent authorities on 18 October 20075. Conclusions of the discussion were the following:
"In the last months the Commission has received several questions from Members of the Parliament on the donors deferral rules applied to persons having sexual behaviours putting them at high risk of acquiring severe infection diseases that can be transmitted by blood.
The Commission included a specific question on this matter in the questionnaire to have a better understanding of the policies applied in this field. During the meeting some delegations completed the information provided in the questionnaire. It appears that the national situations are rather different, depending of national epidemiological situations. The Commission and the Member States agreed on the fact that this issue necessitate further consideration in the future, keeping in mind the work already done in other international organisations such as the Council of Europe or the World Health Organisation.
The Commission concluded the discussion by emphasizing that the donor deferral principles in the Blood Directive primarily aim to guarantee the safety of the recipient. However, the Member States should apply safety measures in a proportionate way. One important element to consider in this context is that the donor selection rules are based on national, up-to-date epidemiological data. In any case, it is fundamental to properly inform the public and specific populations about the factors on which donor selection criteria is based."

St. Theodore of Tarsus,
Archbishop of Canterbury
(AD 602-690)
A native of Tarsus in Cilicia, Theodore was born about AD 602. Having studied in Athens, he visited Rome and, whilst there, was appointed by Pope Vitalian to the See of Canterbury, which had been vacant for four years. Theodore arrived in England in AD 669 and was well received everywhere. He was the first Archbishop whose authority the whole English Church was willing to acknowledge.
The aims which Theodore set before himself were the organization of the Church and the encouragement of learning. He therefore consecrated Bishops to fill the vacant Sees and subdivided the existing Dioceses.
Wilfrid, who at this time ruled all the Church north of the Humber, resisted the attempt to deprive him of any part of his Diocese; but although on his appeal to Rome, the papal decision was given in his favour, Theodore proceeded with the subdivision of the Northumbrian episcopate. Shortly before his death, he was reconciled to Wilfrid, who was restored to his See.
The diocesan system which Theodore sought to establish was accepted by a Synod of the united English Church held at Hertford in AD 673. Another Synod, held at Hatfield in 680, affirmed the adhesion of the English Church to the Catholic Faith.
The enlightened zeal of Theodore allowed learning to flourish in England. Under his direction, and with the able help of Hadrian and Benedict Biscop, seminaries were founded at many of the Monasteries. Theodore died on 19th September AD 690.

680 π.Χ.

(enalios.gr)

Theodore is the fictional memoirs of England's most unlikely archbishop. Saint Theodore was a homosexual Byzantine monk with heretical tendencies, and a taste for Platonic philosophy. He was born during Europe's darkest age, when the Byzantine Empire was overrun by pagan invaders, weakened by civil war, and divided by religious controversy. He sought certainty, and love, among monks, soldiers, philosophers, and barbarian horsemen. He wandered ceaselessly, fleeing war and persecution, pursuing wisdom, searching for security in a collapsing world. In the East, he saw brutality and destruction. In Constantinople, he was drawn into court intrigue. In Italy, he found love, then lonely exile. Then, almost by accident, he was given the task that changed his life. Though greatly learned and widely experienced, Theodore disliked authority, and was undermined by conflicting desires and religious doubts. Despite these obvious disqualifications, he was chosen by the Pope as Archbishop of Canterbury, and sent to England to civilise the semi-pagan Anglo-Saxons. He proved an unexpected success, and, with help from his partner Hadrian, established the Church in England in a form that has lasted, in many respects, until today. Even so, he is less well known than his ineffectual predecessor Saint Augustine, or his bitter rival, the sack-cloth politician Saint Wilfrid.

The Dark Age of Sexuality
(The historical background to Theodore)
The early medieval period was not just a Dark Age in terms of historical events, but also in terms of sex and sexuality. I discovered that when I decided to write a novel based on the life of St Theodore of Tarsus, the seventh Archbishop of Canterbury. There is plenty of information about the sexual proclivities of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Renaissance was notoriously licentious, as Chaucer and Boccaccio record. But in between, all is silence. Even a diligent researcher might conclude that sexuality disappeared with the fall of Rome, to be rediscovered only when fourteenth century scholars read about it in old books.
Of course, Augustine wrote movingly about his own sexual awakening, and showed remarkable psychological insight, even as he condemned lust as evil. But he was a late classical rather than a medieval figure, and, until much later, few followed him in analysing what the Church would rather have repressed.
When I tried to recreate Theodore’s personality in fictional form, I had little to go on but the lives of saints. Hagiographies can be unwittingly informative. St Wilfrid, for instance, sounds utterly awful, even when described by his greatest admirer. I adopted him as a villain and continued my research. To find out about Theodore, I turned to Bede, who tells an odd story about how the archbishop was appointed. An English candidate had died of the plague as soon as he arrived at Rome. The Pope, casting about for a substitute, picked Hadrian, an African monk and scholar. But Hadrian, thinking himself unworthy, refused. More candidates were proposed and rejected, until Hadrian suggested his friend Theodore, a Greek-speaking monk from the heretical eastern fringe of the Byzantine Empire, who happened to be living in Rome.
The Pope was doubtful. He wanted England firmly incorporated in the western, Latin Church, not misled by possibly unsound Greeks, however scholarly. But no more candidates were forthcoming, and England was sinking back into paganism and savagery, so the Pope agreed and appointed Theodore as archbishop. But only on one condition: Hadrian was to go with him as his assistant and advisor on Latin usage.
Several historians have pointed out that there is something unconvincing about this story. I read it again and again, wondering what reality it might conceal. Bede, an accurate and impartial historian, was careful not to say more than he meant. Eventually, I understood. Theodore and Hadrian were gay. Hadrian had refused the archbishopric, not because he was unworthy, but because he did not want to be separated from his friend and teacher Theodore. Once I realised that, I had my story. As well as retelling what we know of Theodore’s life and times, I would explore the conflict between his faith and sexuality.
My novel begins with Theodore’s youth in Tarsus, and ends with his old age in Canterbury, where he succeeded unexpectedly as archbishop, spreading Christianity and literacy, despite the machinations of St Wilfrid. On the way, he wandered the East, searching for faith, encountering various heresies, wrestling with forbidden desires, seeing war and destruction, and being drawn into Byzantine intrigue, before finding love and happiness in a monastery.
To find out more about medieval sexuality I went back to hagiographies and read between the lines. Celebrations of virtue reveal much about what must be avoided, just as monastic Rules, by listing what is forbidden, tell us what was most tempting. I concluded that medieval people were much like modern people, full of desires and fears and conflicts between the two. I hope that Theodore is a convincing demonstration of that.
Christopher Harris, 2000

Theodore of Tarsus
Theodore (602–19 September, 690) was the eighth Archbishop of Canterbury, best known for his reform of the English Church and establishment of a school in Canterbury with major scholarly achievements. He is commemorated as a saint in the Calendar of Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church on September 19.
Theodore's life can be divided into the time before his arrival in Britain as Archbishop of Canterbury, and his archiepiscopate. Until recently, scholarship on Theodore had focused on only the latter period since it is attested to in the Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English, and also in Stephanus's Life of Wilfrid, whereas no source directly mentions Theodore's earlier activities. However, M. Lapidge and B. Bischoff have reconstructed his earlier life based on a study of texts produced from his Canterbury school. Below their work is followed closely concerning the first half of Theodore's life. (en.wikipedia.org)

Gay visitors will find it refreshing that gender views are flexible in Polynesia, and especially in the Samoan islands. Unlike in more homophobic Fiji, queerness is a widely accepted part of Samoan culture, and Western gay men are often cruised, not just by transgender locals but also by officially straight men. Nevertheless, local culture tends toward traditionalism. (outtraveler.com)

ΧΩΡΙΣ ΤΟΝ JACK WRANGLER

"I’m not bisexual and I’m not straight", Wrangler said in an interview.
"I’m gay, but I could never live a gay lifestyle because I’m much too competitive.
When I was with a guy I would always want to be better than him:
what we were accomplishing, what we were wearing -- anything.
With a woman you compete like crazy, but coming from different points of view,
and as far as I’m concerned, that was doable"
.
Jack Wrangler (born June 11, 1946, Los Angeles, California, USA, died April 7, 2009), was the professional name of John Robert Stillman in his roles as both former gay and straight pornography actor and theatrical producer and director. During his career as a porn star, Wrangler appeared in over 85 films. In the early 1980s, Wrangler began appearing in straight porn films, most notably The Devil in Miss Jones II. He told The Advocate that his first sexual encounter with a woman was on screen, in the movie China Sisters. His autobiography, The Jack Wrangler Story, or What's a Nice Boy Like You Doing?, was released in 1984.
