'In Treatment' showrunners to develop 'T'
By STUART LEVINE (variety.com, 5-11-2009)
HBO is in development on a half-hour drama series that explores the gender transformation of a woman into a man.
"T" comes from married couple Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman, who have just signed with the pay cabler as showrunners for the third season of "In Treatment."
Epstein and Futterman had pitched "T" to HBO before the net came back to them to discuss their involvement with "In Treatment." They will write the pilot and serve as exec producers on "T." Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp also exec produce.
Idea for the pilot is inspired by an episode of public radio show "This American Life."
No casting decisions have been made.
HBO has touched on gender transformation before. The 2003 telepic "Normal," starring Tom Wilkinson and Jessica Lange, had Wilkinson's character wanting to become a woman, and both he and Lange were Emmy nominated.
Epstein has worked with HBO previously as a supervising producer on "Tell Me You Love Me," and Futterman, who was Oscar nominated for his screenplay of "Capote," has been an actor much of his career, including a role in "A Mighty Heart."
The third season of "In Treatment" will begin production early next year in New York and will most likely air in the fourth quarter of 2010.
