The Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches of Sweden complain about yesterday's decision by the General Synod of the Swedish Lutheran Church to grant homosexual weddings in churches starting from November 1st.
Through a joint note, Father Fredrik Emanuelson, in charge of the ecumenism of the Swedish Catholic Church, and Father Misha Jaksic, representative of the Orthodox Churches, wrote that they learnt the decision “with sadness”, and added: It is a swing away not only from Christian tradition but also from the point of view on the nature of marriage which is typical of all religions”. The decision taken by the General Lutheran Synod “expresses a radically different vision” from the way in which the Church and the Christian conceive marriage.
The decision of the Lutheran Synod wasn't actually amazing for the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, because “it was preceded by a long debate” within the Lutheran Church, starting at the beginning of this year, when the law grating civil marriage to homosexuals came into force.
“None of us want to annul ecumenical dialogue with the Swedish church – it is said at the end of the note; however, this decision of the Church of Sweden widens the gap”. In any case, “talks are now more important than ever, if we want to fulfil what Christ asked us, that is, to be one, for the world should believe”. (agensir.it, 23/10/2009)
