Love Stories
14 recently married couples remind us what's at stake with California's Proposition 8.
From The Advocate November 4, 2008
One of the great ironies of a political battle is how easy it can be to forget what’s actually at stake. In the frenzy to win (or at least put up a good fight), the principles often consume the people. A perfect example is Proposition 8, the ballot measure to eliminate marriage equality in California. While news reports compared and contrasted the money the “No on 8” campaign raised with that gathered by the initiative’s antigay supporters, legions of gay and lesbian couples (like the 24 on our cover the 14 profiled on the following pages) were ordering red velvet wedding cakes and marching down the aisle. And each of those newlyweds has a love story worth telling -- tales of love at first sight, chance encounters, lifetimes already spent together, and young relationships suddenly solidified. Rip out these pages and share them with your coworkers. Photocopy your favorites and send them to relatives. Because on November 4, what ultimately will make a difference to voters is the people, not the principles.

  1. California Proposition 8 (2008)

Proposition 8 is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. If passed, the proposition would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. A new section would be added stating "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

The measure was submitted for the ballot by petitioners with the title "California Marriage Protection Act." The title and summary were revised by Attorney General Jerry Brown to more "accurately reflect the measure." The Superior Court of California ruled in favor of these revisions, stating, "The title and summary is not false or misleading because it states that Proposition 8 would 'eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry' in California. The California Supreme Court unequivocally held that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the California Constitution."
