The Islandic National Queer Organization
Samtokin '78, the National Queer Organization in Iceland, was founded in 1978, at a time when prejudice and discrimination forced many gays and lesbians to immigrate abroad. The success of the new organization was nothing short of remarkable. In just a few years, it managed to set up an extensive dialog, the media came out in support gay rights and fighting prejudice became a family issue among the Icelanders where family connections are still strong in a population of only 300,000.
Samtökin '78 runs a community centre in downtown Reykjavík, located on the 4th floor of Laugavegur 3 and open for all. Open house on Mondays and Thursday evenings, with a varied programme of of concerts, lectures, exhibitions and film screenings etc advertised on the organisation's website, www.samtokin78.is.
Library

A library is open in the community centre, open Mondays and Thursdays 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. During the winter, the library is also open on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. The library contains a diverse selection of books, magazines, videos and DVDs in Islandic and English.
