In the Fire (79 Minute, 2007)
These four documentaries demonstrate that the LGBT community knows no borders: It’s a fact of life in every community, be it North America, Africa or the rain forests of South America.
24 Frames per Day is a meditation by filmmaker Sonali Gulati, who photographed the front door of her home 24 times a day over nine months. This very personal and political film raises important questions about immigration, cultural stereotypes and diasporic and queer identity.
Meanwhile, deep in the heart of the Brazilian rain forest, four Indians assume their homosexual identity and tell their stories in Tibira Is Gay.
Kenya, where practicing homosexuality is punishable by seven years imprisonment, is still heavily influenced by tribal, religious and neo-colonial values. 7 Years explores the background of this situation and shows how gays and lesbians manage to live in such a hostile environment.
Transphobia is a problem around the world, but even more so in a conservative and religious city like Lima, Peru, where transgender citizens are not protected by any law. In the Fire provides them with the rare opportunity to open up their lives and their hearts and talk about fate, hate discrimination, abuse, hopes and dreams in a society that has openly turned its back on them.
