“BRUHS and GEAN” is a lively one-hour musical that traces the remarkable relationship of Bruhs Mero and Gean Harwood, two gay icons of the Twentieth Century who met in New York in 1929 and remained together until Bruhs’s death in 1995. Bruhs (pronounced Bruce) and Gean (pronounced Gene) were just 18 and 20 when they met. With courage, determination and humor they weathered the often-repressive social climate of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. When social and sexual liberation dawned in the 1960s, Bruhs and Gean were firmly entrenched in their closeted existence, becoming increasingly isolated even post-Stonewall.
The musical is funny and touching.
An earlier version, commissioned by the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, was performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and was featured on In The Life (PBS). The lives of Bruhs and Gean were chronicled in Harwood’s book, The Oldest Gay Couple in America, published by Birch Lane in 1997.
The story of Bruhs and Gean shatters the age-old stereotype of unstable, short-lived gay relationships. Their devotion to each other through good times and bad is an inspiration to straight and gay people alike. Further, a primary message of the musical is that people can change at any age, become enlightened and come out, as Bruhs and Gean did after decades of hiding.
